The Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (University of Luxembourg) has a job opening for a doctoral position on project on the History of the University of Luxembourg. The planning and creation of the first university in the country reflects an interesting moment in the country’s history. It reflects an important transition of the socio-economic development of the country since the 1970s and offers an interesting historical example of a reconversion process.

PhD position Contemporary History

The aim of the historical study is:
- First to retrace the long pre-UL-history of scientific associations, academic training opportunities, and public research institutes and to position UL in the heart of this academic research and education ecosystem in Luxembourg
- Second, to unearth the complex political decision-making process that led to the official creation of the University of Luxembourg in 2003 and to sketch the public debates and discourse that surrounded that creation and its implementation into the country and the Greater Region
- Third, to sketch the fast development and growth of the University and its strategic orientation in terms of research activities and educational priorities
- And finally, to offer a transregional, transnational, and international perspective on how a young university has tried to position itself in the global knowledge economy and competitive university landscape

Your Role
- Realize a PhD thesis on the historical emergence and development of the University of Luxembourg within the C²DH research project “25 years of UL”
- Realize oral-history interviews with important historical actors
- Contributing to the construction of a multi-media digital repository of retro-digitized and born-digital sources that could serve as digital archive for the production of transmedia storytelling-formats for the larger public (virtual exhibit, interactive web-documentary, podcasts)
