Professor of the History of Ideas and Science
Department of Cultural Sciences, Lund University
(http://www.kult.lu.se/).
Vacancy Reference No.: 3510
The position is tenable from 1st October 2009

The History of Ideas and Science at Lund University currently constitutes one of four divisions at the Department of Cultural Sciences. The discipline has a broad research profile, with three areas of specialization: the history of cultural ideas, the history of science, and intellectual history. The department is due for re-organization 1st January 2009.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate actively in all aspects of the work of the discipline. Research and lecturing at undergraduate and post-graduate levels are incorporated in the duties of the post. The professor will also be expected to take administrative responsibilities, including executive duties in the department or at other levels within the university, where appropriate. The appointment assumes that the professor will be actively engaged in the various activities of the department and maintain a high-profile presence.

The division of History of Ideas and Science at Lund University is striving to strengthen its collaboration with other disciplines, within as well as outside the faculty of humanities and theology. Equally, it is seeking to develop further its international network. Candidates must, therefore, provide a well-documented record of contributions to advances in theory and method, experience of working with multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary approaches, an international perspective and a sound ability to work with others. In considering applicants, there will be a strong emphasis on qualities of leadership and communicative ability, as well as experience of initiating, planning and leading externally funded projects. Experience of projects involving national or international cooperation and publications will, thereby, be deemed a particular merit. The area of specialization is open, but priority is given to scholarly research that is relevant to our age, but which also conveys a critical and reflective perception of historical developments.

The successful candidate must have the ability to write and teach in Swedish and English. If the first language of the successful candidate is not Swedish, he/she will be expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.

Qualifications: To be qualified for the post of professor, candidates must have demonstrated a high level of both academic and pedagogical merit.
Assessment will be based on the academic, pedagogical, administrative and other qualities that are deemed important to the filling of this position. In addition, consideration will be taken of managerial skills such as developing, leading, implementing and evaluating educational provision and research, of an ability to cooperate with the community and the ability to disseminate information about the research, education and development being carried out by the department.

In choosing the appropriate candidate, equal emphasis will be placed on academic and pedagogical merits.
