The Department of Religious Studies and Theology in the Faculty of Humanities is responsible for the education in the bachelor programmes of Theology and Arabic Language and Culture, as well as for the master programmes Religions in Modern Societies, Biblical Literature, Spiritual Care and Religious Education and Communication. The departement runs two research programmes, one in Theology and
the other in Religious Studies and Islamic Studies.
The department has the largest school of theology and religious studies in the Netherlands, with about 70 staff members and 500 students.

Professor of Religious Studies (1,0 fte)

Job description
The chair of Religious Studies is a core chair of the Department of Religious Studies and Theology. This chair is intended to reinforce this field of study and to give it a central place within the department. The professor is expected to be primarily an excellent researcher and teacher in the field of Religious Studies. In addition she/he should be able to engage with the growing societal interest in the phenomenon of religion in the modern world, which emerges in discussions about themes like religion, conflict and violence, fundamentalism and secularism, religion and globalisation. She/he contributes to the societal debate on a scholarly basis.

Qualifications
We are looking for an expert in Religious Studies with a broad orientation. The successful candidate:
- has completed a PhD thesis on a topic relevant to the field of study, has a thorough knowledge of Religious Studies and has specialised in at least one living religion;
- has a publication list that reflects recognition by the international scholarly community;
- has experience in supervising PhD students and has a good grant-funding record;
- is able, on the basis of strong and appealing leadership, to create a climate in which scholars feel inspired and challenged to reach the national and international top in teaching and research;
- has a wide experience in teaching at an academic level and in developing academic courses;
- is able to supervise renovation of education at bachelor and master level, preferably with international experience;
- is able to engage in, develop and maintain (formalised) networks of cooperation;
- actively participates in international forums for Religious Studies;
- evidently has the communicative and organisational skills required for this responsible job;
- has a good command of Dutch or is able to acquire this within a period of two years.

Terms of employment
We offer a tenured position of 1,0 fte. The remuneration, depending on knowledge and experience, ranges from € 4,904.- to € 7,142.- gross per month for a full time appointment (professorial scale 2,
collective labour agreement of Dutch universities). Moreover the Utrecht University offers attractive terms of employment.
