The Institute for the History of Medicine at Heinrich-Heine-University Duesseldorf invites a qualified candidate to file and document the correspondence and manuscripts of late Nobel Prize winner Sir John C. Eccles (1903-1997), cf. <http://www.uniklinik-duesseldorf.de/eccles>. The German Research Foundation DFG provides a grant to employ a research assistant (100% TVL 13) for 12 months as well as students to create an archive documented in the online portal Kalliope (<http://kalliope.staatsbibliothek-berlin.de>). Repository and database maintenance will be organized in close co-operation with the team of the institute's library.

Due to the multidisciplinary research interests of John Eccles qualifications in several fields are required, in particular neurology, history of science and anthropology, especially the body-mind problem. In addition, the research assistant is expected to have working experience in laboratory research, in deciphering notes as well as in database maintenance, preferably in a library system. In the final phase of this project we are planning to conjointly initiate a research programme and apply for competitive funding. Being aware of the multidisciplinary challenge, we intend to divide the position in case none of the applicants fulfils all of these qualifications.

Thus, applications of individuals meeting only part of the requirements are welcome as well as applications by members of underrepresented groups. Since quality is more relevant than schedule, the beginning and contract period are also flexible and could be adapted to a certain extent, our plan is to start the project in spring 2011.

Please send your letter of intent, CV, list of publications and three offprints no later than 2011 January 24th to the head of department:
