Tenure-track position in Religious Studies. Area of specialization: Islam

The Program in Religious Studies at the University of Alberta invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in Islam (specialization open), subject to budgetary approval. Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in Religious Studies [Promotion im Fach Religionswissenschaft bzw. Islamwissenschaft] by the date of appointment, 1 July 2012.

The successful candidate will be appointed jointly to the program in Religious Studies and a suitable department of the Faculty of Arts, dependent on disciplinary focus; teaching duties will be assigned to each unit as appropriate. The candidate must have demonstrated capacity in teaching and research, preferably with publications appropriate to this career stage. A normal teaching assignment of four courses per academic year (2+2) will typically include an introductory lecture course each year (RELIG 220, Introducing Islam, from Prophetic Origins to World Religion), as well as three other courses on Islamic and/or other religious studies topics at the junior and senior undergraduate and graduate level. The successful candidate will contribute to our growing M.A. and Ph.D. programs and have the ability to supervise graduate students on topics in the area of Islam and Religious Studies. Hiring decisions for this position will be made on the basis of both accomplishments and potential in research, teaching and interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as fit with program needs.
