Call for Applications - Visiting Scholars-in-Residence

Within the framework of the project "Tropical Botany in Exile. Mona Lisa Steiner (1915-2000): Scientific Continuities, Transfers and Practices in Austria and the Philippines" (director: Prof. Dr. Carola Sachse), located at the Institute of Contemporary History of the University of Vienna, we have the opportunity to offer four to five work contracts (“Werkverträge”) for visiting scholars-in-residence.

The visiting scholars-in-residence will help build an international and interdisciplinary network of scholars working on the history of botany, plant sciences and/or exile in the 20th century. Through their specific expertise and research interests, visiting scholars will contribute to the broader historical and epistemological perspective of our research project, as well as to a contextualization of Mona Lisa Steiner’s botanical activities (For more information see: http://www.univie.ac.at/zeitgeschichte/tropical).

Possible research fields to be examined during a stay in Vienna would be, for example:
- Circulation of knowledge and culture within the international framework of botanical research in the 20th century
- Scientific knowledge, practices and cultures in the context of the plant sciences in the central third of the 20th century
- Plant systematics: Empirical and taxonomical research on tropical flora in the 20th century
- International communication and exchange alongside global scientific networks in war and peace between metropolis and periphery in the 20th century
- The plant sciences and the Cold War
Self-formulated proposals on topics within these or related research fields are welcome. Visiting scholars-in-residence will be expected to produce a manuscript (approximately 20-30 pages) to be published together with other findings from the project in a joint publication (either special issue of a history of science journal or an edited volume).

Work contracts are for a maximum of two months either between November 2013 and July 2014 or between March and May 2015. Depending on the duration of stay, we offer an all-inclusive remunera-tion of 2000 to 4000 € (i.e. we do not cover any further expenses, such as health insurance, travel costs, accommodation). The payment will be offered in two installments: 50% at the beginning of the stay in Vienna and 50% after the article has been approved by the project director.

Scholars will be in residence at the project location in Vienna for the duration of their contract and have their own workplaces at the Institute of Contemporary History (Institut für Zeitgeschichte) at the University of Vienna

Scholars of all nationalities – and especially women - with expertise in the history of biology and/or botany in the 20th century are encouraged to submit a research proposal (maximum 1000 words), a curriculum vitae, a publication list, and a proposal as to when and for how long they would like to work in Vienna. Applications are due on May 1st, 2013, to:
