Lectureship in Early Medieval European History (Fixed Term for 10 months) Department of History and Welsh History Grade 7: £33,230-£36,298 per annum

The Department of History and Welsh History invites applications for a ten-month fixed-term Lectureship in Early Medieval European History, tenable as soon as possible. The appointment results from a period of Leverhulme-funded leave awarded to Prof. Phillipp Schofield, and is non-renewable.

Applications are welcome from specialists in any aspect of the history of continental Europe between c.400 and c.1100, including the eastern and southern Mediterranean and Scandinavia. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at both undergraduate and graduate level; to supervise undergraduate and graduate dissertations and to participate in University examining at undergraduate and taught graduate level. The successful candidate will also have a strong research record or exhibit evidence of the capacity to develop such a record in any relevant field of the history of continental Europe between c.400 and c.1100.

Applications are invited from scholars in any area of the history of continental Europe from c.400 to c.1100, including the eastern and southern Mediterranean and Scandinavia. Any potential candidate in doubt as to the suitability of her or his application is invited to contact Dr Martyn Powell, Head of Department, at the address given below. Applicants, who should display a strong research record or evidence of the ability to develop such a record, should also be enthusiastic teachers. The successful applicant will contribute to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level. In addition to research and teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to play an appropriate part in the administration of the department. Candidates should note the department’s research priorities, shown through its centres for Science, Technology and Medicine; Media History; Historiography and Historical Cultures; and the Social History of Wales, as well as its research clusters in medieval history, urban history, oral history, political culture and gender history. Essential
- An excellent academic record, with a doctorate or equivalent
- Demonstrated expertise in a field of Early Medieval History that will complement and enhance the research culture of the department, and further the needs of the department’s research centres and strategic research interests
- Clear potential for inclusion in the Department’s submission to the Research Excellence Framework, with appropriate regard to present career stage
- A commitment to the highest standard of excellence in teaching
- Flexibility and an ability to make positive contributions to a broad range of modules at Undergraduate and Masters Levels, and research supervision at PhD Level

Desirable
The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate a capacity to, for instance:
- Contribute to the full range of the department’s undergraduate teaching and postgraduate teaching and supervision
- Be fully and actively engaged in all aspects of the department’s work
- Assist in the development of seminars and conferences.
- Contribute actively to the department’s strategy for expansion of its postgraduate supervision and teaching, particularly in an international context
- Develop his or her own publications and research projects, with applications for external funding as appropriate

The Department of History and Welsh History, Aberystwyth University, consists of 18 full - time and 1 part - time members of staff. In recent years the Department has admitted in the region of 160 - 170 full - time equivalent undergraduates each year; approximately 25 - 30 postgraduates are registered in the Department at any one time. The University at Aberystwyth was founded in 1872 and History has been there since its foundation. The Department of History and Welsh History is located on the University Campus close to the University Library, the Union, the Sports Hall and most of the Halls of Residence. The Department is particularly well served in terms of research resources. Its University Library, built up over a century, is of a very high quality, with extensive print and on - line resources. Aberystwyth is also the home of the National Library of Wales, one of the five copyright libraries of the United Kingdom; its outstanding resources in books and manuscripts greatly enhance Aberystwyth’s appeal to the historian, as does the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments, also located within the town.

Research

The University lays great emphasis on the importance of research. History at Aberystwyth was rated 4A (on the highest band submission) in the 2001 RAE, and 45 per cent of its work was judged internationally excellent in RAE 2008. It encourages each member of staff to pursue a vigorous programme of research and publication, both individually and as participants in collaborative projects. The Department has in recent years developed significantly as a home to major research projects and, since 2006, has hosted large, externally - funded projects on medieval seals (AHRC), medieval famine (Leverhulme Trust), the British wartime media (Leverhulme Trust), disability in past society (Wellcome Trust), the British popular music industry (ESRC), and memory and the media (JISC).

Teaching

The Department offers undergraduate single honours degree schemes in History, European History, Medieval and Early Modern History, and Modern and Contemporary History; two interdisciplinary single honours degree schemes, in Modern History and Politics (with the Department of International Politics) and History and Media (with the Department of Theatre, Film and Television), and a wide range of Joint Honour s degrees in which History is combined with another subject, for example, English, European Languages, Geography and Earth Sciences, International Politics, Information Studies, Welsh etc. The degree structure allows students to follow a range of subjects in the First Year, supported by an introductory subject core, and then to concentrate on their Honours subject(s) in Years Two and Three. At Masters level students study a combination of subject core courses and options and associated research training modules, leading to a dissertation. The suite of MAs includes a specialist MA in Medieval History.
