The University of Luxembourg invites applications for the following vacancy in its Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education

Doctoral Candidate in the field of History
(at the Chair for Contemporary and Digital History)

Full-time, 40 hrs/week
Fixed term contract: 3 years (possibility of renewal for a fourth year)

The successful candidate will be based in the Identités, Politiques, Sociétés et Espaces research unit (IPSE), working within the Institute of History and the Laboratory for Digital History. Under the direction of Prof. Andreas Fickers, the candidate will have the opportunity of completing a doctoral thesis in the emerging field of Digital History. The intended research should engage with the methodological and epistemological challenges of digital historiography, such as: digitization of primary sources and digital source criticism, heuristics of digital information retrieval and analysis for historians, developments of new tools for historical data mining and visualization, and new approaches in digital storytelling for historians.

Your Role

- Completing of a doctoral thesis
- Preparation of scholarly publications (conference papers, articles, etc.) in connection with the research area
- Providing assistance in the organisation of seminars, conferences, and other research-related events of the Digital History Laboratory
- Possibility of getting teaching experience in the Master program on European History

Your Profile

- Master’s degree in History or a cognate area.
- Good computer skills (an affinity with digital tools and technologies is highly appreciated)
- Excellent written and spoken proficiency in German and English. Proficiency in French would be an advantage.
