The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the University’s first faculty, is one of the leading faculties of its kind in the world. We offer a comprehensive set of programs across the breadth of the humanities and social sciences and are located in one of the most exciting and diverse cities in the world. The faculty is home to over 10,000 students, including more than 600 higher degree research students and 600 academic and professional staff.

The University wishes to appoint a distinguished scholar of Middle Eastern Archaeology including Turkey, Egypt and the wider Iranian world to the Edwin Cuthbert Hall Chair. Preference will be given to scholars working in the Bronze and Iron Age periods. The successful applicant will be appointed to the Edwin Cuthbert Hall Chair of Middle Eastern Archaeology located in the Department of Archaeology in the School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry and will also be on the Near Eastern Archaeology Foundation Board.

The School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry has an outstanding record and reputation in both research and teaching. Among its staff include laureates, professorial and future fellows as well as other distinguished academics involved in teaching and research. The school is also home to Australia’s oldest department of archaeology whose research and teaching interests are chronologically and geographically wide-ranging, with staff currently engaged with both prehistoric and historical archaeology in Australia, Oceania, East and Southeast Asia, China, Central Asia, the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Teaching and research activities are supported and enhanced by a well-equipped archaeological laboratory.

To succeed, you must meet the following criteria:
- Outstanding scholarship in the field of Middle Eastern archaeology, preferably in the Bronze and Iron Age periods and a proven track record in attracting competitive grants.
- Commitment to teaching and strong track record of teaching performance and experience in innovative curriculum design.
- Good management skills and a willingness and ability to perform high level administrative tasks, including chairing the department.
- Capacity to provide leadership in research and research training.
- Demonstrated commitment to collaboration with other researchers, nationally and internationally, and to outreach projects.
- Capacity to enhance a broad program in archaeology at both undergraduate and graduate level.

TERM & REMUNERATION
The successful applicant will be offered a continuing appointment and a competitive salary package will be negotiated with the successful applicant.
