The Department of Medical Ethics and History Medicine (Prof. Silke Schicktanz) is seeking a research fellow/post-doc in the working group "Cultural and ethical studies of biomedicine“ for 24 months, fulltime or part time, 75%, salary according to TV-L.

The position includes the socio-empirical investigation of the role and functioning of exemplary patients associations in Germany and other countries as well as a subsequent social philosophical and bioethical analysis of collectivity and methods of patient representation in biopolitics. The post-holder’s responsibilities include research and publication on the scientific problem in close cooperation with international partners. The post-doc should aim for an academic career in the interdisciplinary field of bioethics/STS research and will be encouraged to develop own research projects and apply for further research grants. On a smaller scale, we also welcome an involvement in teaching. We welcome and support the successful candidate in pursuing further academic qualifications while holding the position.

Requirements: A very good completed degree in at least one of the following disciplines: Sociology or Medical Anthropology / Philosophy with a specialization in Applied Ethics or Bioethics / Political Sciences with a specialization in political philosophy or health politics. The ability to work independently as well as skills and experience in qualitative socio-empirical research are very welcome. Further interest in interdisciplinary research and especially in bioethics would be an additional asset. The position requires a good command of English for international collaboration and publication, but also German language skills for conducting socio-empirical research in Germany.

The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic, team-oriented, and international research environment which is committed to teamwork and the promotion of young researchers.

The application can be in English or German. It should include a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, graduate transcript (copy okay for initial screening), and a writing sample (a selected chapter of the PhD thesis and 1-2 peer-reviewed publications).

Please send all documents via e-mail to Silke Schicktanz (sschick@gwdg.de) by 20th of January 2015.

If you have any further questions regarding the application, please contact Prof. Schicktanz via e-mail sschick@gwdg.de.
