im Zusammenhang des SNF-Forschungsprojekts “Nachbilder von Revolution und Krieg. Trauma- und Memoryscapes im postrevolutionären iranischen Kino“ für eine Dauer von 3 Jahren zu besetzen.

Im Zentrum des vorliegenden SNF- Projektes steht die Frage nach Theorie und Ästhetik kinematographischer Erinnerungskulturen unter Bedingungen von Zensur. Gegenstand der Untersuchung sind jene Filme, die nach der islamischen Revolution 1978/79, trotz starker Repressionen einen Katalog ausdifferenzierter filmischer Formen entwickelten. Das Projekt sieht vor, im Dialog mit iranischen FilmregisseurInnen und Film-wissenschafterInnen sowie mit Islam- und OrientwissenschafterInnen eine umfassende Topologie filmischer Formen des Erinnerns und Deckerinnerns zu erarbeiten. Im Begriff des „Nachbilds“ erhält das Projekt eine traumatheoretische Rahmung.

Die Mitarbeit am Forschungsprojekt umfasst nicht nur die Exploration eines breiten Korpus an Filmen unter dem Aspekt medialer Erinnerungskulturen sondern auch die Entwicklung theoretischer epistemologischer Ansätze, die geeignet sind, in interkulturelle und interdisziplinäre Dialoge einzutreten. Schwerpunkt der ausgeschriebenen Stelle ist die Erforschung filmischer Formen des Erinnerns im postrevolutionären Kino des Iran bis in die Gegenwart.

Die Stelle als DoktorandIn wird gemäss der Richtlinien des SNF für die Gesamtlaufzeit von drei Jahren finanziert.

Voraussetzung der Bewerbung ist ein abgeschlossenes medienwissenschaftliches, filmwissenschaftliches oder kulturwissenschaftlichen Hochschulstudium (MA). Im Zuge des Projekts soll eine Qualifikationsarbeit verfasst werden. Darüber hinaus erwarten wir die Bereitschaft zur intensiven wissenschaftlichen Kooperation. Da das Projekt die Kooperation mit Farsi-sprachigen Kultur-, Medien- und Islamwissenschaftern und iranischen Filmemachern vorsieht, werden native persian speaker bevorzugt, auch in Hinblick auf kulturelle Verstehens-, Dekodierungs- und Übersetzungsleistungen. Die Beherrschung der englischen Sprache in Wort und Schrift ist ebenfalls unerlässlich.

PhD position in SNF-Research Project „Afterimages of revolution and war. Trauma- and Memoryscapes in the post-revolutionary Iranian Cinema”

The Institute for Media Studies at the University of Basel – Chair of Media Aesthetics (Prof. Dr. Ute Holl) – invites applications for a PhD position to be filled at the intersection of Film Studies, Middle Eastern Cinema Studies and Cultural Memory Studies.
The post will start on February 1, 2016 for the duration of 3 years. Deadline for applications is October 31, 2015.

The research project Afterimages of Revolution and War is to explore trauma- and memoryscapes of the post-revolutionary Iranian Cinema – a cinema that has regenerated and reshaped its forms of remembering against the backdrop of the Islamic Revolution’s iconoclastic storm and the subsequent eight years of war (1980-1988).The project focuses on questions of theory and aesthetics in relation to cinematic memory cultures as determined by censorship. Iranian cinema’s unique forms of temporal and spatial articulations call for a closer analysis of the interrelation of filmic forms and historical formations.
Taking Iranian Cinema as an invitation to enter into dialogue with filmmakers, film scholars and researchers in the fields of Cultural and Middle Eastern Studies, the project aims at developing a topology of cinematic forms of remembering, including the concept of screen memory (Deckerinnerung) as both an analytical tool and a structural condition. By adopting the notion of the afterimage, the project receives a trauma theoretical framework. Based on the exploration of a broader corpus of films in terms of cultural memory and cinematic mnemography, the project’s objective is to elaborate theoretical and epistemological approaches that are suitable to engender an intercultural dialogue and cross-cultural entanglements.

The person appointed will work independently as part of a small dynamic team researching cinematic forms of remembering in Iranian cinema – from post-revolutionary until present times.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the regulations of the SNF (Swiss National Foundation; http://www.snf.ch/en/).

Qualifications: Suitable candidates are required to hold a master’s degree (or equivalent) in Media Studies, Film Studies or Cultural Studies. The candidate is expected to write his or her PhD thesis during the project’s time span. Cooperation with other institutions and engagement in organization of workshops will also be part of the post. As the project includes the collaboration with Iranian filmmakers and Farsi-speaking scholars in the field of Cultural, Media and Islamic Studies, applications of native Persian-speaking candidates will be granted preferential treatment. Fluent command of the English language (written and spoken) is mandatory.
