History and the research area Historical Studies
History at Södertörn University is a research oriented discipline, with focuses on twentieth century and political history, gender and intercultural issues, and the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe. We are an active cooperation partner of the Swedish National Graduate School in Historical Studies and the international research training network Association for Political History.

Doctoral studies in History at Södertörn University are conducted within the interdisciplinary academic platform provided by the research area Historical Studies, which includes also the disciplines History of Ideas, Ethnology, Archaeology, and the Study of Religions. Currently there are around 15 doctoral candidates linked to the area.

Programme themes
From a historical perspective the doctoral student will conduct a study that will contribute to the principal aim of the research programme “Reimagining Norden in an Evolving World (ReNEW)”. This aim is to improve our understanding of Norden in a global perspective in areas such as 1) Nordic cooperation and region-building, 2) democracy, governance, and law, 3) public policy, gender equality, and labour markets 4) Nordic branding and reputation, 5) multiculturalism and globalization, including humanitarian and environmental concerns, or 6) Nordic culture and media. ReNEW PhD students are expected to have a research period at one of the partner universities and attend relevant meetings and courses.

Entry requirements
The general entry requirements are:

1. a second-cycle/master level qualification,

2. fulfilment of the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits awarded at second-cycle/master level, or

3. the acquisition of substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Specific entry requirements
A qualified applicant has the equivalent of 90 credits in a historical discipline and has successfully completed second-cycle studies in history, or has attained the same qualifications outside of Sweden or by taking some equivalent degree. Under special circumstances, the faculty board may exempt an applicant from fulfilling special qualification requirements.

A command of English and other languages necessary for work on the thesis and for being able to carry out empirical studies are prerequisites for admission to the degree program.

Admission and employment
This notification of vacancy includes both admission to third-cycle education, i.e. research level, and employment on a doctoral studentship. The intended outcome for students admitted to third-cycle education is a PhD. The programme covers 240 credits, which is the equivalent of four years of full-time study. A doctoral student’s working hours should primarily be dedicated to his/her third-cycle studies; however, the position may entail other duties within education, research and/or administration, but these may be equivalent to no more than 20 per cent of full-time.

An application for a position on a third-cycle programme is also an application for employment on a doctoral studentship. The employment is for no longer than the equivalent of a maximum of four years full time studies. The provisions relating to employment on a doctoral studentship are stated in the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, Sections 1–7. Doctoral students will be employed by the School of Historical and Contemporary Studies at Södertörn University. The employment will begin on 1 Sept. 2018.
