The ERC Consolidator Grant Project PENELOPE: A Study of Weaving as Technical Mode of Existence is seeking applications for a

Postdoctoral Research Position (E 13 TV-L full time)
(Funding for this position is available for two years from August/September 2019)

Job description
The PENELOPE Project (see https://penelope.hypotheses.org) aims to integrate ancient weaving into the history of science and technology, especially digital technology. One of our main objectives is to investigate how weaving is ‘coded’ across the world and among different cultures and societies. For this task, we are looking for an excellent researcher in the field of the history of knowledge who already has experience with research into the field of handweaving.

The position includes access to our PENELOPE lab (https://penelope.hypotheses.org/laboratory), where we detect the models and topologies of (ancient) weaves, and test and develop codes to make them virtually explorable. The project is hosted by the Research Institute for the History of Technology and Science of Deutsches Museum, Munich.

Requirements
We are looking for a postdoc with a strong interest in our method of practical weaving exploration and an established expertise in ethnological research of weaving, its ‘coding’ practices, and the possibilities and difficulties in calling them tacit. Applicants should hold a doctoral degree in science and technology studies, anthropology, ethnography, or cultural studies.

The applicant must
- have interest in the practical exploration of handweaving
- be able to cooperate and communicate in an interdisciplinary team
- have a track record in applying ethnographic inquiries in cross-disciplinary research
- have strong fluency in English (oral and written)

The ideal applicant would have
- fluency in German
- experience in handweaving
- experience with creative technology (e.g. electronics, creative coding, physical computing)
- experience in academic event organisation

Please send applications including CV, letter of motivation, two representative publications (scans), and outline of research proposal (up to 2 pages about what you want to do in the project) until 25.05.2019 as e-mail with one PDF attachment to e.harlizius-klueck@deutsches-museum.de. Please also direct any questions to Ellen Harlizius-Klück by e-mail.

We will invite selected applicants to an interview on 6. June 2019 in Munich, but we cannot reimburse travel expenses. Deutsches Museum strives for diversity. We welcome applications from all backgrounds.
