About the position
The Faculty of Social Sciences, Nord University, Norway, invites applicants for a 100 % permanent position as associate professor in pre-1750 (ancient/medieval/early modern) history.

Research at the faculty is organised in four groups, among which history is a part of the research group of History, Culture and Media.

Research undertaken by the research group for history is related to town and regional history, legal history, long-distance trade and its regulation, local history, economic history, great power politics, the history of fisheries and coastal society, Roman history and Sami history. The temporal span is from antiquity to the present day. The faculty’s other research groups focus on the welfare state services and social relations, leadership, management and innovation in the public sector, and climate, environment and resource management in the Northern area.

The successful applicant will complement our current research interests and develop new fields. We seek to strengthen both research and teaching, and are therefore looking for applicants with relevant national and international connections, motivated to help build a strong, relevant and productive research environment at Nord University. The successful applicant will partake in the faculty’s history teaching programs at both lower and higher grades. The successful applicant may expect to undertake a variety of teaching tasks at all levels and within a broad range of periods and themes. Preference might be given to applicants with experience with indigenous and/or Sámi history. Archaeologists with documented interest in historical archaeology and an ability to teach in History are also encouraged to apply.

Duties and responsibilities
The position entails teaching and supervision at all levels and within a broad range of periods and themes.
The position involves research and development, including dissemination.
Participation in the development of externally funded research projects will be expected, as well as furthering research collaborations with national and international partners.
It is assumed that the appointee will contribute to the development of the academic community in the faculty, together with other colleagues.
Nord University faculties are distributed over several campuses, so co-operation between faculty regardless of geographical location is important. The position may involve tasks at Nord University’s other campuses.

Qualification requirements
Priority will be given to documented research competence within the relevant subject area. The minimum requirement is a doctorate in the relevant subject area or equivalent academic qualifications.

Applicants must provide documentary proof to show that they possess basic skills in respect of the planning, implementation, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision. New supplementary provisions on professional educational competence will be applicable by September 1th 2019. For further information please refer to Nord University’s website. Any applicants who are unable to provide documentary proof of adequate professional educational competence when employed must acquire such competence over the course of a two-year period. Nord University offers a course on University Pedagogy which covers this requirement.

The person who is appointed to the post should be able to teach in Norwegian or another Nordic language within two years after appointment.

If able to document competence as a full professor, the hire may, following an application, have the position upgraded to a full professorship. She/he will, in any case, be encouraged to strengthen academic credentials in order to qualify as full professor, and be supported in the process.

Publications from the last five years will be given special emphasis.

Experience in teaching and supervision at Bachelor and Master levels from higher education institutions.

Personal qualities which can contribute positively to the academic environment.

The position as Associate Professor is remunerated according to the State Regulative Associate Professor code 1011. Salary level by agreement. Statutory contributions to the National Pension Fund are deducted from the salary. The position is tenured and full time.

Application process
Applications will be reviewed by two committees, one internal and one external. The internal committee will prepare a short, reasoned report identifying the five to seven applicants that they judge to be the most suitable, without giving any indication of rank.

Among other matters the question of whether the applicant would be willing to move to Bodø will be raised. Applicants who are so willing will, other qualifications being equal, be given priority.

The five to seven chosen candidates will be asked to return a more thorough application and a selection of academic publications. The external committee will rank at least the two best qualified candidates. Ranked candidates will be invited to give a trial lecture and to an interview.
