New York University (NYU) Berlin is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach an undergraduate course entitled "Comparative Modern Societies: Politics and Society in 20th-century Germany" in the Fall 2013 semester.

NYU Berlin is one of New York University's global study-away sites and provides American and other international students with the opportunity to spend a semester studying in Berlin while earning credits towards their degree. The program is designed for BA students in the social sciences, arts and humanities who want to earn credit in their major - including sociology, history, politics, studio art, art history, European studies, and environmental studies - while having a transformative experience abroad. Most courses are taught in English. Teaching takes place in the academic center located within the complex of the KulturBrauerei in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg. The program size is 70-100 students per semester.

Position:
We are seeking a part-time lecturer for the Fall 2013 semester (September 1st to December 19th) for the course "Comparative Modern Societies: Politics and Society in 20th-century Germany". The course corresponds to a sociology class taught at NYU New York that looks at the theory and methodology of the study of modern societies and their major components. Next to the Sociology Department, the Berlin course is also approved by NYU's History and Politics Departments, hence a wide variety of students with very different prior knowledge are taking this class. For the class taught in Berlin, Germany is the case study. Students are provided with an overview of modern German history and the different approaches for analyzing German history and society. However, a European and global context is also provided and an attempt is made to synthesize sociologically the nature of modernity and its implications for the individual. The course meets once per week for 3 hours (ideally Tuesday afternoons). The sessions are a mixture between Vorlesung and Seminar. Remuneration is between 4500 and 5000 EUR, depending on expertise and experience.

Requirements for Interested Candidates:
- Doctorate in a relevant discipline.
- Record of research and publications in the field.
- A minimum of three years teaching experience at university level.
- Applicants should be EU nationals or hold a German work permit for the duration of the employment.
- Preference will be given to candidates who have studied in the US and/or have international teaching experience.

Terms and conditions will be discussed with the successful applicant.

Applications, in the form of a C.V. and a statement addressing the candidate’s teaching and research interests (all in English), as well as student evaluations if available and references, should be sent by July 22nd via e-mail to Dr. Gabriella Etmektsoglou (ge377@nyu.edu) and Dr. Roland Pietsch (rp99@nyu.edu). Interviews are expected to be held on July 25th/26th.
