The Haifa Center for German and European Studies is offering a doctoral scholarship of 20,000 euros per year (1,600 euros per month) for a period of three years, totaling 60,000 euros, starting in October 2024. The funds are provided by the German partner cities (Bremen, Düsseldorf, Erfurt, Mainz and Mannheim) of the City of Haifa as a contribution to the Archive and the Museum of German-Speaking Jewry in Israel (Yekkes)The scholarship is dedicated to the research on “German-speaking Jewry in Israel” (Yekkes). It is intended to provide a researcher with the opportunity to study the archive in depth, to work with the center's staff - the director of the archive, the Yekkes project manager (who works on oral history), and the digital humanities expert - and to develop research project on Yekkes stories related to the German partner cities.
The scholarship holder will have to find a PhD supervisor at the University of Haifa (the HCGES will provide help finding a suitable supervisor), and register as a PhD student. Throughout the three years the student should be based in Haifa in order to be part of the HCGES team and participate in the center’s meetings and events.
Candidates should hold an MA degree in the humanities or social sciences (preferably Jewish history). They should have a profound understanding of German-Jewish history and ideally have had some experience with archival work. Knowledge of German is a must (at least B2 level), as most of the source materials are in German. The scholarship holder will be required to (a) publish at least one article in a high-impact journal during the scholarship period, (b) cooperate closely with the German partner cities by e.g. conducting archival work in Germany and (c) work with our team to develop an online platform that will make archival stories about Yekkes' life available to educators and the general public.
To apply, please submit (a) a CV, (b) a digital copy of your MA degree, (c) two recommendation letters from academic advisors, and (d) a short project outline including the motivation for applying (1 page). All documents should be submitted no later than March 31st to Ghaidaa Zoabi via mail: zghaida@univ.haifa.ac.il.
