The Swinburne Institute is interested to hear from prospective PhD students wishing to do research in either of two broad areas: (1) historical responses to refugees and asylum seekers; (2) memories of (forced) migration.

Swinburne University offers three-year scholarships of A$25,392 p/a to successful applicants, and a tuition fee-waiver (worth approximately A$20,000 p/a).

Applicants are expected to meet the following criteria:

(1) successful completion of a postgraduate degree (MA or equivalent) at a reputable university

(2) exceptionally good marks and grades (final marks for the MA, and an average in the last two years of study, of at least 86/100 or "sehr gut")

(3) excellent English writing skills and a TOEFL score of at least 90 (with no band less than 20)

(4) fluency in one language other than English

Students with a disciplinary background in history or anthropology are particularly welcome.

Expressions of interests need to include the following:
(1) electronic copies of recent academic transcripts
(2) detailed research proposal
(3) one unpublished writing sample (ideally in English)
(4) CV
