Die zwei größten europäischen Forschungsnetzwerke zur Geschichte der Arbeit, die COST Action „Worlds of Related Coercions in Work“ (WORCK) und das European Labour History Network (ELHN), veranstalten von 30. August 2021 bis 3. September 2021 am Campus der Universität Wien eine internationale Konferenz mit über 50 Panels, mehreren Plenarvorträgen und Podiumsdiskussionen, Arbeitsgruppentreffen und AutorInnenworkshops und einer Ausstellung mit Vernissage.

Die Veranstaltung findet hybrid statt. Erwartet werden rund 350 Personen aus Europa und der ganzen Welt, von denen etwa ein Drittel vor Ort und zwei Drittel digital teilnehmen werden.

Die Konferenz widmet sich der Geschichte und Entwicklung von Arbeitsverhältnissen in ihrer historischen Tiefe und geografischen Breite. Sie dient der internationalen Vernetzung unter HistorikerInnen, AnthropologInnen und SoziologInnen, die zur Geschichte, Gegenwart und Zukunft von Arbeit arbeiten, und fördert den Austausch zwischen Forschenden, Kunstschaffenden, PolitikerInnen und der Wiener Öffentlichkeit zu brennenden gesellschaftlichen Themen unserer Zeit.

Am Montag wird die von der Ökonomin Anamarija Batista und der Historikerin Corinna Peres kuratierte Ausstellung „Geschichten von Arbeit und Zwang: wissenschaftliche Beiträge als Illustrationen“ (Stories of Work and Coercion: Scientific Contributions Depicted in Illustrations) mit einer feierlichen Vernissage eröffnet und der ehemalige EU-Kommissar für Beschäftigung, Soziales und Integration, László Andor, spricht in seiner Keynote über soziale Rechte in Europa und das Ost-West-Gefälle.

Am Dienstag diskutieren WissenschaftlerInnen, ArchivarInnen und AktivistInnen unter der Leitung der Vorsitzenden des ELHN-Netzwerks Silke Neunsinger über die neuen Arbeitsbedingungen unter Covid-19, und am Mittwoch wird in Anwesenheit der beiden RegisseurInnen Milica Lupšor und Branislav Markuš der Dokumentarfilm „Obrani berači“ gezeigt und diskutiert, der sich die landwirtschaftliche Saisonarbeit und Frauenrechte im post-sozialistischen Vojvodina (Serbien) zum Thema gesetzt hat.

Die Tage Donnerstag und Freitag sind unter dem Titel „Historicising the Concept of Europe in Global History“ sozialen Ungleichheiten innerhalb von Europa und deren Konzeptualisierung in gegenwärtigen globalhistorischen Debatten gewidmet. ExpertInnen diskutieren gemeinsam mit den KonferenzteilnehmerInnen einschlägige Publikationen zum Thema.
