Comparisons between Genoa and Venice have been drawn primarily from the perspective of the discipline of history. It has also been questioned whether a comparative approach is useful at all, positing the two sea powers as "incomparable". However, the way in which they established a system of colonies is a field for which significant analogies have been suggested. This conference will aim to re-evaluate this approach and broaden the horizon to the material and visual culture.

Comparisons between Genoa and Venice has been drawn, if at all, primarily from the perspective of the discipline of history. Both similarities and differences have been noted, but it has also been questioned whether a comparative approach is useful at all, positing the two sea powers as „incomparable”. However, the way in which Genoa and Venice established a system of colonies in the coastal areas of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea is a field for which significant analogies in practices and solutions have been suggested. On the other hand, one can justly ask why the „colonial systems”, and architectural and artistic features of their colonies were in many respects very different. This conference will aim to re-evaluate this approach and explicitely broaden the horizon to the material and visual culture of both the cities themselves and their colonies.

By doing so, archival work, numismatic and epigraphic studies, art history and archaeology, grounded in both local examples and cross-geographical field studies, will be brought together. Furthermore the concepts and terms related to research on the phenomenon of colonies will be scrutinized to reach a more methodologically sound discussion. It is hoped that the compararive perspective might be especially fruitful regarding this aspect. Thus the aim is twofold: first, to gain a more thorough and differentiated unterstanding of the motivations, actions and processes of patronage and art production, and second, to connect researchers working in various specializations and from different countries.
