Die Tagung - veranstaltet im Rahmen des DFG-geförderten Projekts "ADRIA: Die adriatisch-ionische Küstenzone in hellenistisch-römischer Zeit", geleitet von Prof. Frank Daubner - beschäftigt sich mit Fragen der politischen, sozialen und ökonomischen Geschichte der westlichen Balkanhalbinsel in einer breit gefassten Transformationszeit. Sie soll als Plattform für disziplinen- und länderübergreifenden Austausch über aktuelle Forschung zu den ostadriatischen Regionen in der Antike dienen.

Mit der Erweiterung des altertumswissenschaftlichen Blickes über die Kernräume der griechisch-römischen Welt hinaus erlebt auch die Forschung zu Illyrien und Epirus seit einigen Jahrzehnten einen markanten Aufschwung. Gerade wegen ihrer peripheren Lage zwischen Italien, Griechenland und den alpin-balkanischen Kulturen wurden diese Regionen zentral für den Austausch zwischen Ost und West, Nord und Süd, gleichsam ein Versuchslabor für die zunehmende Verflechtung des Mittelmeerraumes. Dies wirft Fragen nach Mitteln und Modalitäten des Austausches, aber auch nach lokaler agency in Wechselwirkung mit äußeren Einflüssen auf. Diesen soll im Rahmen einer breit gefassten Transformationszeit zwischen der Formierung von Städten und Staaten in Illyrien und Epirus und der nachhaltigen Etablierung der römischen Herrschaft nachgegangen werden. Die Tagung versteht sich als Plattform für die Diskussion von Fallstudien und Konzepten sowie den fächerübergreifenden Austausch.

Current Research on Illyria and Epirus, 4th century BC - 1st century AD

Within the larger trend of scholarly interest expanding beyond the core regions of the Graeco-Roman world, the last decades have seen a marked increase in research about Illyria and Epirus. Precisely because of their peripheral location between Italy, Greece and Alpine-Balkanic cultures, these regions became central for the exchange between East and West, North and South. This raises questions regarding the means and modalities of exchange as well as the role of local agency in an interplay with outside influences. These questions will be studied within the broad context of a transformative period from the rise of cities and states in Illyria and Epirus to the final establishment of Roman rule. The conference aims to provide a platform for the discussion of case studies and concepts and for transdisciplinary scholarly exchange.
