The summer school is the third in a series of international summer schools that concentrate on different geographical contexts (Latin America, July-Aug 2009/ Sub-Saharan Africa, July 2011/ Asia & Australia, July 2013/ Middle East, 2014).

The encounter with Asian concepts and case studies shall enable us to study the cultural conditions and limitations of current Western theories as well as to analyze various approaches to conflict, peace, and reconciliation in Asian cultures and religions. In addition, we will take an in-depth look at the recent history of Australia and the country’s attempts to come to terms with its past and to establish new relations with the Aborigines.

Furthermore it will focus on the role of Buddhism in Asian conflicts (Japan, Vietnam, and China/ Tibet), and case studies on Sri Lanka, India, Cambodia, and East Timor will be explored in lectures and workshops. The “Sunshine Policy” in South Korea and the “Search for the Soul” (N. Habel) in Australia will also be analyzed and discussed. The Summer School will also compare the culture of memory in Germany and Japan after World War II.

Application:

The seminar will be of interest to young scientists with a first degree who wish to proceed with their Ph.D. and for peace workers who want to deepen their theoretical knowledge.

Travel and accommodation costs will be reimbursed.

Participation fee: 160 €.

The summer school offers 25 stipends. Interested persons from all countries are invited to apply until 28th February 2013 via e-mail.
