The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, is seeking to recruit a POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN EUROPEAN HISTORY, from 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2024 (a fixed term of 12 months).

The Postdoctoral Researcher’s position is allocated to the Department of History and Ethnology and its Subject Area of History.

Post Doctoral Researcher in European History

As a member of a research group, the postdoctoral researcher prepares 2-3 scientific articles or book chapters for publication. The publications are related to the theme of the Academy of Finland Professor's research project "Political Representation: Tensions between Parliament and the People from the Age of Revolutions to the 21st Century", i.e. the history of representation, democracy or relations between the people and parliament between the eighteenth century and the present day (see Political Representation — Humanities and Social Sciences (jyu.fi)). The period studied may be shorter and relate to the history of Britain, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway or Sweden, or to the comparative and transnational history of these countries. The researcher utilises the parliamentary debate material collected in the project and the interface built for its analysis. You will become part of an international and multidisciplinary research group funded by the Academy of Finland and the University of Jyväskylä, which engages in close and inspiring cross-border cooperation.

Qualifications we are looking for
The duties, qualification requirements and language skills for the position of the Postdoctoral Researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines.
The post requires a thorough knowledge of political history, conceptual history or intellectual history and a PhD in a related field. Knowledge of digital and comparative history and a broad knowledge of European languages would be an advantage. Excellent skills in spoken and written English language are essential. While not mandatory, ability to read one or more of the following languages is appreciated: Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Norwegian, Swedish.

The salary of the successful candidate will be based on level 5-6 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research staff in the salary system of Finnish universities and will depend on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. The annual salary range starts from 43,500 EUR for the Postdoctoral Researcher (gross income, including holiday bonus).
A trial period of three months applies to this position.
