The Centre for Medieval Studies (CMS) is seeking candidates to fill 2-3 postdoctoral fellowships.

The Centre was launched in January 2003 as a result of the Norwegian Research Council’s initiation of Centres of Excellence (CoE). The centres are devoted to long-term, basic research on a high international standard. In 2005 CMS/NCMS was launched as a Nordic Centre of Excellence (NCoE) as a result of the Nordic Research Council’s initiation.

CMS/NCMS is an interdisciplinary centre, and its principal research objective is to identify formative characteristics of the Europeanization of Europe, in particular through relations between the periphery, i.e. Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, and the core, i.e. Western and Southern Europe.

Applicants are welcome to submit proposals which fall within the Centre’s research programme. For more information and the Centre’s research programme, see the following website http://www.uib.no/cms/research/research.htm or contact director Sverre Bagge, by e-mail: post@cms.uib.no or phone (+47) 55 58 23 25.

Under similar circumstances, the following areas will be given priority: 1) church and religion, 2) administrative literacy, 3) the Latin literary culture. Following from the overall aims of the CMS, the projects should preferably have a comparative perspective, either Nordic or European.

Appointment to a post doctoral fellowship will normally be for a period of three years, during which the fellow will conduct his/her own research. Candidates may also be appointed for a further year, during which the fellow may assist with teaching and/or other project related work. Thus, the maximum period of employment may be 4 years, subject to the needs of the centre or affiliated department. The fourth year must be agreed with the centre/department at the time of appointment.

Applicants must have achieved a Norwegian doctorate or equivalent education from abroad, or have presented the dissertation for assessment by the closing date for applications. It is a prerequisite that the dissertation has been approved before appointment is granted.

It is the chief objective of the position to qualify the successful candidate for top level academic positions.

Salary will be paid in accordance with level 57 (code 1352/24.1) on the government salary scale (currently NOK 435.500,- p.a.). From the gross wage a 2% law-enforced membership in the State Pension Fund (Statens Pensjonskasse) is deducted. For particularly well qualified applicants a higher salary may be considered.
Persons appointed to a post doctoral fellowship will be expected to relocate to the University of Bergen and conform to the regulations that apply to the position.

Women in particular are encouraged to apply. If, in the opinion of the evaluation committee, several applicants have approximately equivalent qualifications, the rules on equal opportunities laid down in the Personnel Regulations for Academic Positions will be applied.

State employment shall reflect the multiplicity of the population at large to the highest possible degree. We have therefore adopted a personnel policy objective to ensure that we achieve a balanced age and sex composition and the recruitment of persons of various ethnic backgrounds. Persons of different ethnic backgrounds are therefore encouraged to apply for the position.

The University of Bergen applies the principles of public openness when recruiting staff to scientific positions.
