At the Centre for Medieval Studies there is a vacant position as Researcher.

The Centre was launched in 2003 as a result of the Norwegian Research Council’s initiation of Centres of Excellence (CoE). The centres are devoted to long-term, basic research on a high international standard. In 2005 CMS/NCMS was launched as a Nordic Centre of Excellence (NCoE) financed by the Nordic Research Councils.

CMS’s is an interdisciplinary centre, and its principal research objective is to identify formative characteristics of the Europeanization of Europe, in particular through relations between the periphery, i.e. Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, and the core, i.e. Western and Southern Europe.

The position is externally funded and on the condition that funding is complete, the successful candidate will be employed for a period of two and a half year, from 1.6.2010.

The researcher must work with a project which falls within the Centre’s research programme and the project “The Arrival of Writing”, see the website: http://www.uib.no/cms/en/research/research-plan, more specifically oral art forms and the relationship between oral and written culture. Focus should be on Old Norse literature but preferably with a broad comparative and interdisciplinary approach. The appointee will form part of the senior group at the Centre and participate in the management and planning of research within CMS and in collaboration with our partners. Tasks will include elaboration of a strategy for additional funding, organisation of conferences and publications, and public outreach initiatives as well. Working place is CMS, University of Bergen.

Appointees must have achieved a Norwegian doctorate within the centre’s disciplines, or equivalent education from abroad, or have presented the dissertation for assessment by the closing date for applications. It is a prerequisite that the dissertation has been approved before appointment is granted.

The applicants will be evaluated with reference to their general scholarly qualifications, their project plan, their experience within research management, and their participation in research programmes and international collaboration.

Salary will be paid in accordance with level 57-64 (code 1109/p.f. 24) on the Norwegian Government salary scale, currently NOK 438.700 (level 57) gross p.a. In the case of particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered. A compulsory 2% contribution to the State Pension Fund (Statens Pensjonskasse) will be deducted from gross salary.

Further details of the position including details of the subject areas and areas of responsibility, special duties and other circumstances given special emphasis in connection with the position, can be obtained from director Sverre Bagge, by e-mail: post@cms.uib.no or phone (+47) 55 58 23 25.
