The Institute of History at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH-Zürich) invites applications for a 60% doctoral position in a research group on “The Global Anti-Alcohol Movement (1870-1940)”, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The position is affiliated to the chair “History of the Modern World” (Prof. Harald Fischer-Tiné). It can be extended up to three years and is tenable from September 1, 2010. The annual salary starts at CHF 40,200 in the first year and reaches CHF 46,200 in the third year.

In particular, the position requires studying anti-alcohol organizations and campaigns in Argentina and Chile, and writing a PhD thesis (in either English or German) on this subject within the three years under contract. Applicants should hold an M.A. (or its equivalent) in Latin American History, or alternatively in the field of modern history (18th to 20th century) combined with a proficient knowledge of the Spanish language. They should have a profound interest in transnational and extra-European history and be willing to work in an international, English-speaking environment.

Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae, a letter of motivation, documentation of their qualifications and at least one letter of reference by an academic teacher by May 18, 2010.
