The Faculty of Arts of the University of Leuven invites applications for an academic position in the field of political history, especially regarding the history of political institutions, movements, conflicts and/or ideas in Europe in the 19th-20th century from a comparative, international or transnational perspective. The appointment will include academic teaching, scientific research and scientific support.

Tasks

The elected candidate will have to conduct and direct high level research, develop research projects and establish national and international co-operation in the field of political history, especially regarding the history of political institutions, movements, conflicts and/or ideas in Europe in the 19th-20th century from a comparative, international or transnational perspective.

Academic teaching includes courses at bachelor and master level, and supervising undergraduate and doctoral theses in both History and in the Master in European Studies: Transnational and Global Perspectives. Depending on the experience of the candidate he/she will be asked to teach an introductory course on the history of one European country (e.g. British Isles, France) and a course on European politics. The final teaching assignment, in Leuven and at Campus Kortrijk, will be determined in consultation with the History Permanent Educational Committee (POC).

The successful candidate is expected to exercise tasks of academic support and self-management.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a doctorate in history or an equivalent qualification. They are expected to have an excellent research record that will reflect positively on the quality and standing of the department. This quality of research should be apparent from publications in international journals and books. International research experience is highly appreciated. A thorough knowledge of the Belgian political history is a plus but not necessary. Applicants must be willing to work towards further internationalization of research and education. They are expected to have acquired high-level instructional qualities and skills as necessary to train and teach future bachelors and masters, and to have the necessary relational skills and leadership capacities to work as a good colleague in the Department of History and the research unit.

Candidates who do not yet possess a fluent knowledge of Dutch, which is required for the purposes of teaching and administration, are expected to acquire the relevant proficiency within three years of appointment. Good knowledge of English is required.
