Im Rahmen der Arbeitsgruppe „“Effects of Contact and Exchange in the Euro-Mediterranean” des Leibniz-WissenschaftsCampus „Byzanz zwischen Orient und Okzident” ist zum 1. Oktober 2019
eine Postdoc-Stelle als wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in
(Entgeltgruppe TV-L 13 / Vollzeit)
zu besetzen. Die Stelle ist befristet auf ein Jahr (12 Monate).
Die Arbeitsgruppe “Effects of Contact and Exchange in the Euro-Mediterranean” des Leibniz-WissenschaftsCampus „Byzanz zwischen Orient und Okzident” Mainz/Frankfurt (http://www.byzanz-mainz.de) beschäftigt sich mit den kurz- und langfristigen Folgen von interkulturellem Kontakt und Austausch im euromediterranen Raum unter Beteiligung oder Einwirkung von Byzanz. In einer komparativen Perspektive soll danach gefragt werden, wie fremdes Wissen, fremde Ideen oder Objekte in verschiedenen Regionen zu verschiedenen Zeiten von den jeweiligen Gesellschaften übernommen und dabei in einem längeren Prozess transformiert wurden. Darüber hinaus wird auch die Wirkungsgeschichte der byzantinischen Kultur in den diese rezipierenden Gesellschaften untersucht.
Der im Rahmen dieser Arbeitsgruppe behandelte Zeitraum erstreckt sich vom Frühmittelalter bis zum 19. Jahrhundert. Beteiligt sind die folgenden Fächer: Christliche Archäologie/Byzantinische Kunstgeschichte, Mittelalterliche Geschichte, Vor- und Frühgeschichtliche Archäologie (Schwerpunkt Mittelalterarchäologie), Byzantinistik, Osteuropäische Geschichte, Frühneuzeitliche Kirchengeschichte, Musikwissenschaft und Neuere Geschichte (Frühe Neuzeit).
Von dem Stelleninhaber / der Stelleninhaberin wird erwartet:
- Die Erarbeitung und Einreichung eines Projektantrages, etwa bei der DFG (z.B. Walter Benjamin-Programm; „eigene Stelle“) oder der Gerda Henkel-Stiftung (Forschungsstipendium), im Rahmen der oben genannten Thematik.
- Einreichung eines publikationsreifen wissenschaftlichen Aufsatzes zur Antragsthematik in einem einschlägigen Publikationsorgan.
- Mitarbeit bei der Entwicklung eines GIS basierten digitalen Atlas zur Byzanzrezeption.
Die Arbeitsgruppe „Effects of Contact and Exchange in the Euro-Mediterranean” bietet einen intensiven fachlichen und interdisziplinären Austausch zwischen allen am Leibniz-WissenschaftsCampus beteiligten Institutionen (Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Leibniz-Institut für Europäische Geschichte, Goethe-Universität Frankfurt) sowie vielfältige Gelegenheiten zur internationalen Vernetzung.
Voraussetzungen für die Bewerbung sind eine überdurchschnittlich abgeschlossene Promotion in einem der beteiligten Fächer sowie Erfahrungen in der interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit. Kenntnisse im Bereich der Digital Humanities und der Arbeit mit GIS sind erwünscht.
Zur Erhöhung des Anteils von Frauen im wissenschaftlichen Bereich sind geeignete Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen nachdrücklich aufgefordert, sich zu bewerben.

Within the Research Group “Effects of Contact and Exchange in the Euro-Mediterranean” at the Leibniz ScienceCampus “Byzantium between Orient and Occident“
1 post-doctoral position (wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in)
(salary scheme 13 TV-L, 100%)
is to be filled for a period of 1 year (12 months).
The goal of the Research Group “Effects on Contact and Exchange in the Euro-Mediterranean“ at the Leibniz ScienceCampus Mainz/Frankfurt (www.byzanz-mainz.de) is to examine the short-term and long-term effects of intercultural communication, which took place with considerable Byzantine intermediation and under Byzantine influence in the Euro-Mediterranean sphere. In a comparative perspective, we will ask how the appropriation of foreign knowledge, ideas and objects had an effect on different regions and/or societies, in particular from a chronological perspective which extends beyond the end of the Byzantine Empire. Furthermore, the history of reception and its impact on these societies will be reflected upon.
Participating in this Research Group are the disciplines of Christian Archaeology/Byzantine Art History, Medieval History, Early and Prehistorical Archaeology (with a focus on Medieval Archaeology), Byzantine Studies, Eastern European History, Early Modern Church History, Musicology and Early Modern History. The project covers the period from the Early Middle Ages to the 19th century.
The successful candidate is expected to:
– develop and submit a project application, e.g. to the German Research Foundation (Walter Benjamin-Programm) or Gerda-Henkel-Stiftung along the lines of the aforementioned topic
– complete a scholarly paper that merits publication (corresponding to the topic)
– cooperate in the development of a GIS-referenced digital atlas on reception of Byzantium
The Research Group “Effects of Contact and Exchange in the Euro-Mediterranean” offers intensive specialist and interdisciplinary exchange with colleagues at the Universities of Mainz and Frankfurt, the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum Archaeological research institute (RGZM), the Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) and diverse opportunities for international networking.
Requirements for the application include an excellent dissertation in a participating field, as well as experience in interdisciplinary work. Additional experience in Digital Humanities and knowledge of GIS are desirable.
To increase the proportion of women within the sphere of scholarship applications from female researchers are especially welcome.
