Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD stipend to support research on 'Student Cultures in Early Modern Germany'. Applicants should submit a research proposal defining a specific project that relates to and explores an aspect or aspects of this general theme. Viable areas for research might include but need not be restricted to the following: social mobility, elite formation, patronage, career expectations, urban interactions, lifestyles, ritual, deviance, violence, crime and punishment.

The research will take place under the supervision of Dr Richard Kirwan, a specialist in the history of early modern universities and academic culture (http://www.ul.ie/ULH/node/46). The successful candidate will also benefit from the expertise of the cluster of early modern specialists in the Department of History and the University of Limerick more generally. The PhD Teaching Fellow will contribute to the vibrant research, teaching and postgraduate cultures of the Department of History.

The duration of the award is for a maximum of three years commencing September 2015. The continuation of the award after the first year of the project will be subject to a successful review of progress. The award will take the form of a stipend of €15,000 per annum plus a waiver of EU fees to the value of €4,321 per year. The recipient of the award will teach undergraduate students up to a maximum of six hours per week during teaching semester.

Candidates must have an M.A. in History or a related discipline. Advanced reading knowledge of German and Latin is required.

Applicants should submit a research proposal of 3,000 words. This should include the following elements: (a) project title; (b) project abstract (max. 300 words); (c) description of the research topic; (d) identification of primary sources; (e) description of how the project relates to existing scholarship; (f) a research schedule (max. 200 words). Applicants should also submit a C.V. and furnish the names and contact details of two academic referees.
