Department of Medieval Studies at Central European University, Budapest

Central European University, Budapest, is the only transnational English-language graduate school in Europe that is accredited both on our continent (in Hungary) and the United States.

The Department of Medieval Studies is a highly cosmopolitan place of learning, a site of transnational academic socialization where sophisticated scholarship is combined with an easy-going atmosphere and social relevance. See http://medievalstudies.ceu.hu/about-us.

Students come from all over the world. The great majority of them receive grants or fellowships, as well as other forms of need- and merit-based financial assistance. http://www.ceu.hu/admissions/financialaid

The faculty, staff, and students are cosmopolitan and multilingual, coming from, among other countries, Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The curriculum is comparative, interdisciplinary, and up-to-date with the most recent developments in scholarship. The major subject areas are:

- Theories, methods, and skills of Medieval Studies
- Social, economic and political history of Medieval Europe
- History of everyday life, material culture, urban history
- Medieval archaeology
- Medieval mentalities
- Manuscript codicology and diplomatics
- Late Antique Studies
- Renaissance and Early Modern Studies
- Eastern Mediterranean Studies
- Byzantine commonwealth,
- Ottoman studies
- Jewish studies
- Medieval philosophy
- Religion and intellectual history

The courses are taught in English.

The Source Language Teaching Group offers courses in Latin, Ancient Greek, Arabic, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Classical Hebrew, Classical Syriac, Turkish and other source languages. http://sourcelanguages.ceu.hu/

The following programs are offered in the academic year 2012/2013:

One-year MA program: Applicants to the program are expected to hold a first degree (diploma, MA) and have completed at least four years of previous studies in history, art history, archaeology, literature, philosophy, or any discipline relevant to the study of the Middle Ages. http://medievalstudies.ceu.hu/programs/master/one-year

Two year MA program Master of Arts in Comparative History: offered jointly with the Department of History designed for those who have completed a Bachelor's degree or comparable undergraduate degree. http://medievalstudies.ceu.hu/programs/master/two-year
