Der internationale Masterstudiengang Mediterranean History ist ein konsekutiver Studiengang, der auf das dreijährige BA-Studium Geschichte aufbaut. Als forschungsorientierter Studiengang in englischer Sprache vermittelt er ein epochenübergreifendes Verständnis mediterraner Gesellschaften.

Als Kontaktzone Afrikas, Asiens und Europas ist der Mittelmeerraum ein "flüssiger Kontinent" (Gabriel Audisio), auf dem sich Grenzen von Herrschaft und Besiedlung, Kultur, Religion und Sprache immer wieder in verschiedene Himmelsrichtungen verschoben haben. Die Region ist heute von herausragender Bedeutung für Migration und Tourismus, Ökologie und kulturelles Erbe, den Konflikt und Dialog zwischen Kulturen und Religionen. Viele aktuelle Probleme des Mittelmeerraumes reichen weit in die Vergangenheit zurück und können daher nur in einer Perspektive langer Dauer verstanden werden. Vor diesem Hintergrund rekonstruiert der internationale Masterstudiengang den tiefgreifenden Wandel und die globalen Verflechtungen des Mittelmeerraumes epochenübergreifend.
Das weltweit einzigartige Studienprogramm vermittelt BA-Absolvent:innen geschichts- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Fächer eingehende Kenntnisse der Geschichte, Kulturen und Sprachen mediterraner Gesellschaften. Zugleich erwerben sie praktische Kompetenzen und regionale Expertisen, die nicht nur in der Wissenschaft dringend benötigt werden, sondern auch von den zahlreichen Institutionen, Organisationen und Unternehmen, die in der Region aktiv sind und mit ihr kooperieren.
