MA IN THE HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE AND MEDICINE (HPSM)
2008/09 Programme

Durham University's Department of Philosophy, Centre for the History of Medicine and Disease (CHMD), and School of Medicine and Health are inviting applications for their 2008/09 Masters Programme in the History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine (HPSM).

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAMME
This one-year (two years part-time) degree provides students with a deeper understanding of historical, cultural and philosophical issues in science and medicine from antiquity up to the present day. Its primary aim is to show how the intellectual vibrancy of the humanities is relevant to a deeper understanding of past and present scientific and medical issues.

DURHAM UNIVERSITY
Durham University is England's third oldest university. A leading British research institution, its lecture halls and colleges are located in the historical district of Durham City, a world heritage site that also includes a Romanesque Cathedral and a Norman Castle. The CHMD is based in the newly built Wolfson Research Institute on the waterfront of Queen's Campus at Stockton-on-Tees. The Department of Philosophy, the main site where students take most of their modules, is located in an attractive eighteenth-century building in the centre of Durham, close to lecture rooms, the university library and computer labs. The department received the highest mark in the 2001 teaching assessment (QAA 24 points) and the high evaluation of 5 in the 2001 national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).

SPECIALITIES OF THE HPSM MA STAFF
The wide spectrum of academic staff from the Department of Philosophy, the School of Medicine and Health, and the Centre for the History of Medicine and Disease allows students to focus their papers on a wide variety of topics, some of which include:

History and Philosophy of Biology and Evolution; History and Philosophy of Alchemy, Chemistry and Physics; History of Medicine and Public Health; Medical Ethics and Bioethics; Medical Humanities; History and Philosophy of Environmental Thought; History and Philosophy of Sex, Gender and the Body; History and Philosophy of Science and Religion; Metaphysics and Science; History and Philosophy of Psychiatry; History of Scientific and Medical Literacy; History and Philosophy of Colonial Natural History

ADMISSION
The HPSM programme in Durham is unique in that it actively seeks to assemble a diverse group of students who have excelled in their undergraduate studies, or who have demonstrated a notable commitment to scholarship during their professional career. In the past, the programme's unique focus has attracted strong applications from Europe, the Americas, China and India. We regularly admit students with degrees in the arts, humanities, natural sciences, social sciences and medicine.
Medical students can apply to the programme for an intercalated degree. They need to have successfully completed stage 4 (i.e. four years of medical training) of a qualifying medical degree at an approved university.
For admission, a high mark on your first degree (or equivalent) is required.
