THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH WELCOMES INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS TO ITS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HISTORY

If you are considering obtaining a PhD degree in history from one of America’s leading universities, then the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of History welcomes your application to its graduate program!

The University of Pittsburgh’s History Department is a mid-size department with an international faculty and student body dedicated to excellence in research and teaching. The graduate program in history offers highly individual graduate training, with a faculty/graduate student ratio of 1:1.3. Excellent library resources, the expertise of various area studies centers, and the intellectual vibrancy of Pitt’s campus contribute to the university’s standing as a premier institution for training the historians of the future.

The graduate program is organized around four thematic fields, all of which emphasize a transnational approach to the study of history. The department’s regional expertise rests in particular in early modern Atlantic, modern Latin American, modern Central and East European, and East Asian history. Moreover, the World History Center, located within the department, supports the department’s mission to study the history of transnational and transregional connections.

The University of Pittsburgh’s urban campus is embedded in one of America’s most dynamic cities. While proud of its industrial past, the former ”Steel City” has transformed itself into a leader in technology, health care, and education. With the smokestacks long gone, Pittsburgh has become a green city, and is consistently ranked among the United States' most livable places. The city, which sits at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers, is known for its spectacular topography, its well-preserved nineteenth- and twentieth-century architecture, the diversity of its neighborhoods, and its vibrant cultural life. In short, Pittsburgh is America at its best, and the perfect place to pursue a graduate degree.

Admission to the graduate program in history at the University of Pittsburgh is highly competitive, but students accepted into the program have the opportunity to receive full funding through fellowships and appointments as teaching assistants.
