The Question of Genocide: History, Memory and the Present

with
Aleida Assmann (University of Konstanz)
Alexander Etkind (University of Konstanz/CEU Vienna)
Dirk Moses (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill)

Recent and current military conflicts have repeatedly brought the concept of genocide into the centre of public attention, whether as a normative legal notion, an analytical category or a tool of political struggle. Three distinguished scholars debate the nexus between past mass violence, how it is commemorated in public sphere, and academic research. The panel will explore how the scholarly study of violent past should meet the challenges posed by current events, but also how scholars can contribute to fostering a reasoned and balanced public debate on past and present violence.

The event is organised in cooperation with Colloquium Modern History
