From August 27th to September 5th 2019 the Department of Classical Philology and the Department of History at the University of Zadar (Croatia) will be organizing international "Summer School in Latin Epigraphy – Zadar 2019".

The school is intended for graduate and PhD students and postdoc applicants, both from Croatia and abroad, although undergraduate students can apply as well, and the expected number of participants is 20. The school has various aims: to facilitate reading and understanding of Latin inscriptions (either from Roman age or from later periods) as well as enable students to independently analyze and interpret texts, while placing them in historical and social contexts. At the end of the School participants will present an essay on one of the more complex monuments, demonstrating their ability to master appropriate scholarly and scientific methodology, which will also be rewarded with a Certificate of participation.

The programme will include lectures of prominent scholars (both on the basics of epigraphy and on scientific interpretations of monuments) as well as group and independent exercises on specific monuments in contemporary setting of Croatian cities and their cultural institutions (Zadar, Split, Podgrađe, Nin), which is usually unavailable for students attending regular classes. The participants will also be introduced to other epigraphies through lectures on glagolitic alphabet and inscriptions in that ancient Croatian script, which makes this school unique in its scope.

The lecturers will be from Croatia (universities of Zadar, Pula and Split), Italy (Trieste), Austria (Graz) and Germany (Flensburg) and lectures and exercises will be in English. All lecturers are renowned experts in Latin epigraphy, which will ensure the best transfer of knowledge to the participants.

After the successful completion of the School, a Certificate of participation with 3 ECTS will be awarded. If students consider using the Summer School to obtain credits (ECTS), they will still have to inquire at their home institution whether or not these ECTS will be recognized.

Accommodation:
The participants will have to cover the costs of the accommodation.
During the second half of August and the beginning of September many hotels and hostels are still fully booked or have only a few rooms left, therefore, it is very important for the participants to book the accommodation as soon as possible.
Up to March 25th 2019 the organizers will pre-book accomodation in Boutique Hostel Forum (https://hostelforumzadar.com/en), in four-bed rooms, at a very convenient price of 190 HRK person/day + 35 HRK breakfast (optional) for participants who request it from the organizers.
For those who want to choose other accommodation, there are plenty of excellent apartments or other types of lodgings near the venue at a reasonable price. We recommend browsing booking.com (places near the University in the old town centre) and looking for places with at least three stars and with the booking.com rating of at least 7.5 and upwards.

Travel:
The best way to travel to and from Zadar is by plane and/or by bus; unfortunately, there are no trains leading to Zadar, but there are many buses from Zagreb to Zadar, and the drive takes approximately 3 and a half hours.
There are some direct flights to Zadar either by major airline companies or the low-budget ones; however, most of them usually fly on certain days only (e.g. Mondays and Fridays); alternative is to fly to Zagreb (which has more direct lines) and then proceed by bus. Bus lines from Zagreb to Zadar are quite frequent and you can find timetables at
