"Integrative Approaches to Contemporary Cross-Cultural Music Making: Turkey, Italy, Germany", organised in collaboration with the German Historical Institute (Rome), the Orient Institute (Istanbul) and the Istanbul Berlin Art Bridge (Bahçeşehir University, BAU), focuses on contemporary cross-cultural music in Turkey, Italy and Germany. Departing from theoretical and aesthetic questions of cross-cultural music as seen by musicologists and musicians, composers will present their individual approaches to eastern-western musical encounters. Panel discussions and workshop talks deal with the difficult interaction between traditional and western-educated musicians and composers as well as with institutional and political aspects of cross-cultural experiences. At least two concerts, one of which features one of the most famous groups of contemporary music in Turkey (Hezarfen Ensemble), will present today’s Turkish art music in its fascinating and unique intercultural vitality.
