For a workshop at the Institute for European Ethnology at the University of Vienna we invite ethnologists, cultural- and social anthropologists, historians, geographers, archaeologists, and literary scientists conducting island ethnographies from an historical and cultural studies perspective.

The workshop is designed as an interactive format: After the submission the participants will be assigned as peer commentators for one paper and the submitted papers will be circulated among the participants. Participants will present their research in various sessions, receiving direct feedback via peer comments. The topics will be discussed in interactive roundtables. In addition, there will be a keynote by Regina Römhild (Berlin) and a visit to an exhibition about islands in the Weltmuseum Wien.

The aim of the workshop is, in addition to historical-empirical, theoretical and methodological reflection, to intensify networking between academics working in the field of island studies.

The Call for Papers is specifically aimed at junior researchers and doctoral students but is also open for advanced researchers. The workshop will be held in English.

If you are interested, please submit an abstract of 250 words in English and biographical details of 150 words for a presentation of max. 15 minutes to sarah.nimfuehr@univie.ac.at or greca.nathascia.meloni@univie.ac.at.

The convenors plan to publish an edited book within the publication series of the Institute of European Ethnology. The publication will include contributions from the workshop and selected contributions from the Institute Colloquium Anthropologie der Insel of the Winter Semester 2019/2020.
