Die vorliegende Ausgabe der Zeitschrift widmet sich der Kultur- und Religionsgeschichte Zentraleuropas im späten 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. Sie verknüpft Studien, die sich aus geschichtswissenschaftlichen und literargeschichtlichen perspektive verschiedenen Facetten der Religiosität in der Region widmen.
Der erste Gesichtspunkt besteht in der Analyse der Konversionen im späten 19. Jahrhundert, die als geeignete Schnittstelle für die vergleichende Religions- und Sozialgeschichte Zentraleuropas behandelt werden. Die zweite Studie analysiert die Rolle, die die Religion bei der Formierung der Tschechoslowakischen Republik in der Zwischenkriegszeit spielten und wie sich die Religion hier mit der komplizierten nationalen Frage verwob. Der dritte Text benutzt bisher unbekannte Quellen aus den Vatikanischen Archiven, um das Verhältnis der katholischen Kirche und der katholischen Parteien mit dem ersten tschechoslowakischen Präsident T. G. Masaryk neu umzudeuten und die letzte Studie nähert sich aus literaturgeschichtlichen Perspektive der sich im 20. Jahrhunderts dynamisch wandelnden aristokratischen Religiosität in Tschechien und Ungarn im Vergleich an.
Der Diskussionsbeitrag gibt eine breite Übersicht über die katholisch geprägte Literatur Zentraleuropas im 20. Jahrhundert. Rezensionen und kürzere Besprechungen wichtigster Bücher, die neulich zu verschiedenen Themen zentraleuropäischer Geschichte und Kultur erschienen, runden die Ausgabe ab.

Tomáš W. PavlíčekIs conversion a change of religion or a religious change? Possibilities and limitations of historical research of the late 19th and early 20th century
The author of this paper researches conversion on the basis of 1) religious term and its different meanings in historical contexts, 2) study of the convert‘s „Lebenswelt“ and his local church and religious culture. At first he compares the similar meanings of the term conversion in different theological encyclopedias (change of religion) and puts forward Karl Rahner’s notion of internal conversion as Bekehrung (a change of the involved man in his spiritual relationship to God) as an inspiring tool for the methodology of ecumenical or comparative church history. A summary of church development and the legislative status of different denominations in the Habsburg monarchy in the 19th century follows. The author argues that the wave of religious changes in the late 19th century was truly brought about by the internal pluralization of religious culture. He demonstrates his point by analysing conversion in the Prague diocese in 1900.
Martin ZückertState change and confessional forming. The churches and the German population in Czechoslovakia after 1918
The study analyses, how the political change after 1918 influenced the conditions of churches in relation to ethnic affiliations. It shows with an emphasis on the Germans in Czechoslovakia how activities of foreign confessional groups altered the terms in the examined churches. The paper concerns an overview that should be followed by further detailed analyses of the relation between confessional and ethnic minorities in the interwar period.

The article deals with the relationship between T. G. Masaryk and the Catholic Church after the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918. The paper reflects actual synthesis of the relationship of T. G. Masaryk and Catholic Church, their mutual association and struggle at the turn of the 10´s and 20´s of the 20th century. The analysis presents important editions of documents, Czech archives regarding the religious person of T. G. Masaryk and new open archive collections of the Vatican Secret Archives.
Martin C. PutnaThe Writers Schwarzenberg and Esterházy: Aristocracy, Modernity, Literariness and Religiosity The study deals with literary works of aristocrats in the 20th century. It pursues the topic of relation of the aristocracy to modernity and their family tradition, using the examples of Karel VI Schwarzenberg (May at the Castle) and Péter Esterházy (Harmonia caelestis). A special attention is paid to transformation of aristocratic religiosity – from an inherited tradition of the Estates to individualization and subjectivization. Further, the study addresses the change of an image of the aristocratic landscape – from a compact island of a pre-modern world to postmodern montage of fragments of the past.
