ŠTEFÁNIK Martin The exporting of copper from eastern Slovakia to Western Europe in the first third of the 14th century S. 785-814.
Exporting of copper from eastern Slovakia through Poland and the Hanseatic ports on the Baltic coast to Flanders is documented from the 1320s and 1330s at a time when convoys of galleys operated between Venice and Flanders. As a result of its transit through Poland, it was called “Polish copper” (Rame de Pollana). It represented one of the important types of copper on the market at Bruges, from where it was transported in the form of rectangular plates to Venice. According to documents preserved in Venice from the papers of the copper merchant N. Paolini, he sold 108 hundredweight (centnars) (= c. 5.15 tonnes) of Rame de Pollana in 1324. In the Venetian foundries, it is mentioned in 1334 as one of the five basic types imported to the city. These records show that this trade was profitable in spite of the long voyage around Europe. KOLLÁROVÁ Ivona The secret book trade after the outbreak of the Great French Revolution. Symptoms of the latent history of communication S. 815-848.
The study analyses the censorship legislation and censorship records from the period of the Great French Revolution with the aim of pointing to the existence of a latent world in the history of communications as a result of the action of disciplinizing pressure. It captures the investigation of the distribution of anonymous political pamphlets and the unsuccessful search of the whole of Hungary for the secret private printing press with the aim of eliminating the problematic anonymous texts that threatened the public peace. Analysis of the innovative censorship legislation and sources on the investigation and testimony of importers enable us to generalize about not only the adaptation of importing practices to the adjusted conditions, but also about the methods of exculpation in the detention of suspected goods. The study shows that the illegal book trade was an important part of the history of communications, which spread and reproduced untolerated ideas in spite of prohibitions. MACHO Peter The historical micro-narrative as an Instrument in the formation of collective identity and memory. The symbolic and ideological dimension of the visit of Štúr’s group to Ján Hollý at Dobrá Voda. S. 849-884.
The study analyses the structural elements of the story of the visit of Štúr and two of his followers to the poet Ján Hollý. The meeting of representatives of the Protestant and Catholic intelligentsia in 1843 was a key moment in the Slovak national historical narrative. It symbolizes national unity overcoming confessional limitations. The author studies this story as part of the nationalist repertoire, pointing to its use for the needs of national ideology. SZABÓ Miloslav “For God and Nation” Catholicism and the Far-Right in the Central European Context (1918–1945) S. 885-900.
The study deals with the somewhat controversial issue of the so-called “clerical fascism”. For this purpose, it summarizes the recent historiographical debates on totalitarianism, in particular on “political religions” or rather politicization of religions in the 20th century. The special emphasis is laid on individual clerics who sympathized and collaborated with fascist regimes in Nazi Germany and the Slovak state, respectively. In applying Roger Griffin’s and Thomas Forstner’s typology, two types of attitudes to fascism and National Socialism are discussed: loyalty and active collaboration. Key words: Politics. Religion. FIAMOVÁ Martina The preparation and course of the land reform in Slovakia, 1939–1945 S. 901-932.
The subject matter of land reform and the related issue of ensuring that land was owned by ethnic Slovaks, had already appeared in Slovakia in the time of autonomy after 6 October 1938. Reflections about the change of land ownership from the beginning referred not only to Jews, but also to the land of foreigners, the land allotted within the 1st land reform, as well as to the land of Slovaks. The prepared land reform was supposed to compensate for the iniquities caused by the 1st land reform and return the land back “to the hands of those who truly work on it”. Unlike the owners of shops and enterprises, Jewish landowners did not represent a very large class of people, but even in spite of this fact, the following Aryanization of this Jewish land property was subject to corruption. The local and state authorities as well as common people participated in the process of transferring Jewish land into the hands of “Aryans”. However the Slovak government failed in its effort to create a strong middle class of peasants who would support Hlinka’s Slovak People’s Party. Key words: Land reform. Agricultural policy.
