This research project examines the changes in global working environments from a historical perspective. It analyzes how the relationship between digital technology, gender relations and emotions has changed in various fields of work, including office work, industrial manufacturing and agricultural production. Such a comparative view of developments in different world regions enables statements to be made about different timelines, global inequality in access to technology and the diverse formation of gender roles.
The fellows work on three central questions:
- What emotional reactions did the introduction of digital technology evoke? What cultural differences existed?
- How did emotional debates affect technology use in the workplace?
- How did the introduction of digital technology affect gender relations in the workplace?
We offer fellows the opportunity to work on their individual research projects and actively engage with the scholarly community at the University of Graz, including a presentation of their work.
Fellowships may begin in November 2022 and end in December 2023. The fellowships entail travel to Graz, a monthly stipend or salary according to the individual situation of each fellow, and office space.
- The Junior Fellowships are intended for PhD candidates. The Junior Fellowship can be granted for a period of four months.
- The Senior Fellowships are intended for researchers with “Habilitation” or second book or advanced postdocs with experience as a research group leader and a track record in the indicated research area. The Senior Fellowship can be granted for a period of two to four months.
Fellows are expected to spend their fellowship in residence, to work on a major project, and to participate in the final symposium of the research project: “Global workspaces in transition.” The closing date for applications is September 15, 2022. We particularly welcome applicants working on African, Asian, or Latin American case studies.
The application should include a cover letter including preferred dates and duration, a short CV (max. 5 pages) and a project description (max. 1,000 words).
