The Taube Department is opening a three semester-long International MA Programme in Jewish studies as of 1 October 2022. Taught entirely in English, the Programme is addressed to students from all over the world with a particular interest in East European Jewish history and culture, including literature and religion. Built on the expertise of our core faculty and guest lecturers, the Program will provide students with an excellent opportunity to study the history and culture of East European Jewry from top experts in the field and to acquire cutting-edge research skills and command of Yiddish, Hebrew, and Polish. Our students will be in a unique position to explore the vast material heritage of Polish and East European Jewry and to forge professional relationships with academic, educational, and heritage institutions in Poland and its neighbours.

Admissions

The Admissions Process – a summary:

- Fill out your personal data and choose the Programme that you wish to apply to
- Wait for your letter of offer – it usually takes around 2 weeks from the date that we receive your complete application and a registration fee payment
- Letter of offer received? Please log in to your application, accept the offer, and pay for the first year of studies within 4 weeks from receiving the letter of offer
- When your payment appears on our account, we will issue the Final Acceptance Letter and the visa support letter (if you need one, of course)

- Please put together a complete set of the documents (and make a copy of each one) needed to register at our University to start your studies and receive a student ID.

To receive a letter of offer, you must:

- Provide all required documents
- Fulfill other recruitment conditions for your selected Programme
- Meet all indicated deadlines
- Receive a notice from the University studies coordinator that your application is complete

Academic requirements

Very good English language proficiency (written and spoken) as all classes will be conducted in English. Proficiency in modern Hebrew or Yiddish on at least the B1 level according to the Council of Europe’s guidelines. Basic research competences in the field of humanities or social sciences obtained at the level of undergraduate studies. Basic knowledge of the history of Poland, Central and Eastern Europe and the history of Jews. Holders of Polish Diplomas and Diplomas Obtained Abroad.

The following conditions for admission must be fulfilled:

a) a higher education diploma entitles its holder to enter the Programme. Holders of a BA or MA degree in Jewish Studies, a BA or MA degree in other programmes, and alumni of Jewish institutions of higher learning may apply if these schools provide sufficient language skills, i.e., knowledge of modern Hebrew or Yiddish at least at the B1 level according to the Council of Europe’s guidelines. Candidates who cannot present a certificate proving knowledge of modern Hebrew or Yiddish at the required level will need to pass the exam in one of these languages at the B1 level during the recruitment process.
b) a certificate proving proficiency in the English language on at least the B2 level according to the Council of Europe’s guidelines. This certificate may take the following forms:

- certificate on the completion of a preparatory course for taking up studies in English at B2 level issued by the English Language Centre of the University of Wrocław
- certificate of proficiency of the English language at B2 level issued by the English Language Centre or the Foreign Language Centre of the University of Wrocław
- language certificate (such as FCE, TOEFL, IELTS 5,5 – 6,5, BEC Vantage) or other equivalent international certificate recognised by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education or the UWr Foreign Language Centre, listed on the SPNJO website

The following candidates are exempted from the requirement to present a certificate proving proficiency in the English language:

- candidates for whom English was the language of instruction in the secondary school or a higher school from which they graduated
- candidates whose native language is English
- candidates who passed their secondary school final exam in English at the advanced level with at least 80 percent score
- candidates who during their studies passed an English exam at the B2 level, as confirmed in the diploma supplement

c) Candidates who meet the conditions enlisted above will be required to pass an interview to check their basic knowledge of Jewish culture and history. The interview will be graded from 0 (lowest) to 5 (highest), with 3 as the passing mark.

Required Documents

- Legalized Bachelor or Master degree certificate
- Legalized Transcript of grades (and supplements if applicable) from your bachelor or master studies
- Certificate confirming English Language proficiency on B2 level. Does not pertain to native speakers
- Photocopy of valid passport
- Digital passport-size photo

Remember:

1. All academic documents need to be legalized by a Polish Consulate or Apostille in the country of issue
2. To receive a positive decision for your admissions application, you must:

- Provide all required documents
- Fulfill all additional requirements required by your specific Programme
- Meet all indicated deadlines
- Receive a notice from the studies coordinator that your application is complete

Legalization

Original certificates or their duplicates must be legalized by:

1) the Polish consul in the country where the certificate was issued or in the country in which your school was situated
2) if a certificate was issued by a country – party to the Hague Convention of 5th October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement for Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, an original certificate, its duplicate or a notarial copy with an Apostille placed on it or attached to any of those documents must be submitted.

Apostille

On October 5, 1961, several countries joined to create a simplified method of legalizing documents through the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents. If your country recognizes the Apostille (also called Apostille Certificate or Certificate) as a form of international document legalization, your degree must be certified by the Designated Competent Authorities. Please note that all documents must be translated into English or Polish.

Tuition Fees

The tuition fees for the English language MA Programme at the Taube Department of Jewish Studies are as follows:

- for EU candidates: 2.200,00 EUR per academic year
- for non-EU candidates: 3.500,00 EUR per academic year
- all candidates are required to pay a registration fee of 20,00 EUR for each application

Candidates are required to pay the total amount of the one year tuition fee for the first year of the Programme. The tuition for the third semester will be half of the annual tuition fee. Please note that students must cover all bank charges. Please note that the date of posting (receipt of funds on the University account) decides if the payment meets the deadline.

Please note that the final date for receipt of the registration fee payment is 31.08.2022. The final date of receipt of the tuition fee payment is 23.09.2022.

Please be sure to provide us with the correct and complete information when making payments (the name of the sender if the payment was not made by you, title, amount etc.), to ensure that it will be easily located and credited to your application. If your transaction confirmation does not provide this information, please send us an e-mail (international@uwr.edu.pl) with all payment information so that we can match the payment to the application.

Refund policy

Please note that the REGISTRATION FEE (20,00 EUR) is non-refundable, unless you:

- paid it but did not submit an application – a handling fee of 4 Euro will be charged
- The Programme/course to which you applied was not opened – the full amount will be refunded
- In case you are unable to begin your Programme for any reason, you can apply for a TUITION FEE refund. For detailed information on how to apply for this refund, refer to the website of the International Office

VISA

Applicants who need a visa to study in Poland will receive a letter of support from the University of Wrocław. The letter will be issued after you have been admitted to your Programme. We will submit an offer which you will accept, and then our bank account will be credited with your tuition payment for the first year of studies. The faster you make the payment, the faster you will receive the letter from the University and be able to start the visa process.

You should contact your nearest Embassy/Consulate of Poland. The necessary documents and other specific requirements vary from country to country, therefore it is highly recommended to ask your local diplomatic post for valid information. In the case of student visa applications, the required documents generally include:

- acceptance letter from the university
- visa support letter
- Proof of medical insurance
- bank statement confirming proof of sufficient means for living in and returning from Poland
- Photocopy of original passport
- Flight tickets
- visa fee payment
- the visa application itself

It is crucial not to provide the Embassy/Consulate with falsified documents, as it will cause the application to be rejected. Also, remember that a Polish national/student visa allows you to study in Poland and travel for short periods to other Schengen countries only.

If you plan to travel in and out of Poland numerous times, please apply for a multiple-entry visa.

After being granted a student visa, please have your acceptance letter from the University when you are travel to Poland. At the border control when entering Poland, and consequently the European Union, for the first time, you will be asked to state the purpose of your travel, and you may be requested to provide proof of that purpose.
