Time and History: A one-day symposium.
Saturday 24 March 2007
1000-1700
Roehampton University, London

This symposium offers historians a rare opportunity to discuss the concept of time and the manner in which it is conceived in both History and other disciplines. The event will serve as the launch for a new Centre for History and Theory at Roehampton which aims to become a leading centre for the study of historiography and the philosophy of history in the UK.

Confirmed speakers at the symposium include:
Professor Penelope J. Corfield, (Royal Holloway, University of London) whose much-awaited Time and the Shape of History will be published in time for this symposium by Yale in 2007.
Professor Jonathan Rée, (Roehampton University), whose work on Heidegger and Kierkegaard offers much to historians.
Professor Heidrun Friese (Johann-Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main), editor of the influential collections Identities: Time, Difference and Boundaries and The Moment: Time and Rupture in Modern Thought.
Dr William Gallois (Roehampton University), whose book Time, Religion and History will be published by Longman-Pearson in 2007.

The symposium will address the question of time and history from a series of disciplinary perspectives and will address non-western temporalities, such as Buddhism and the Dreamtime, as well as those from the west. It will close with an extended roundtable featuring the main speakers and chaired by the historian and poet Dr John Seed (Roehampton University) for whom questions of time have been central to his historical and poetic work. We expect this to present opportunities for attendees to engage with our theme and our invited speakers.

The fee for the event will be £30, which includes lunch and tea, and £10 for postgraduate students. Those interested in attending should, in the first instance, contact Dr William Gallois at Roehampton by e-mail: w.gallois@roehampton.ac.uk
