With its wide-ranging expertise, covering almost all areas of historical scholarship, and its proximity to institutions such as the British Library, the Institute of Historical Research and the Warburg Institute, among others, UCL offers unique conditions for doctoral research in History. The History department contains between 70 and 90 postgraduate research students - working on topics that range chronologically from the ancient Near East to twentieth century Europe and the Americas. Our staff as well as our student body are extremely cosmopolitan, attracting students from all over the world. Many students work in a comparative or transnational perspective and are involved in UCL’s Centre for Transnational History. Integration of research students into the department and research as a collective experience are at the core of our graduate programme. In addition to the department’s regular training seminars, most doctoral students participate in the seminars of the Institute of Historical Research and take courses at the UCL Graduate School. Our research students regularly organise their own workshops, conferences and seminars. Funding for such events, as well as for individual reaearch trips and conference attendance is available from the Department and from the UCL Graduate School. Occasionally students are supervised in cooperation with colleagues based in other departments (e.g. Language departments, Archaeology, History of Art). You can discuss possible supervision with the Graduate Tutor, Eleanor Robson (e.robson@ucl.ac.uk).

The department offers scholarships for UK, EU, and overseas students of varying sums and depending on different circumstances. Full information available here: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/history/postgraduatestudy/researchdegrees/pgr_prospective/pgr_funding
