The Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History (ZZF) Potsdam, Department I (Communism and Society), seeks to employ a

Doctoral Student (f/m/d)

in the joint research project „Adjustment and Radicalization. Dynamics in Popular Culture(s) in Pre-War Eastern Europe“, under the supervision of PD (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) Dr. Juliane Fürst. The envisaged starting date is May 1, 2023. The position is part-time (65%) and limited to a term of 36 months. The salary is paid in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement for public employees in Germany (TV-L 13).

The research project is funded by the Leibniz Association and investigates the development of popular culture(s) in East Central and Eastern Europe and their adjustment and radicalization to increasingly authoritarian systems since the 1980s from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective. A joint team composed of researchers at the Leibniz Centre for Literary and Cultural Studies in Berlin (ZfL), the Leibniz Institute for History and Culture of Eastern Europe in Leipzig (GWZO), and the Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History in Potsdam (ZZF) will investigate different phenomena and genres of popular culture through a series of case studies in Russia, Ukraine, Hungary and Belarus. We will analyze processes of adaptation and protest, as well as the instrumentalization of seemingly non-political cultural practices and products ‒ including those in the field of alternative public spheres ‒ by state and non-state actors.

Research proposals can be on any topic within the recent history of popular culture(s) in Russia or Ukraine, with a preference given to proposals that touch upon themes of nationalism, imperialism, colonialism or any other political radicalization.

Requirements

Applicants must have a Masters’ degree in history or cultural studies or in a related field. Fluent English language skills (min. C1 level) and good to very good competency in Russian and/or Ukrainian are prerequisite.
