The position is assigned to the interdisciplinary OeAW Heritage Science project "Digitization, Recognition, and Automated Clustering of Watermarks in the Music Manuscripts of Franz Schubert". The goal of the project, which is scheduled to run for 3.5 years, is to use thermography, machine learning, and signal processing to develop a new method for automatically categorizing the watermarks in Franz Schubert's music manuscripts.

The position is assigned to the interdisciplinary OeAW Heritage Science project "Digitization, Recognition, and Automated Clustering of Watermarks in the Music Manuscripts of Franz Schubert" (DRACMarkS), which is carried out in cooperation between the ACDH-CH and the Acoustics Research Institute (ARI) of the OeAW. The goal of the project, which is scheduled to run for 3.5 years, is to use thermography, machine learning, and signal processing to develop a new method for automatically categorizing the watermarks in Franz Schubert's music manuscripts.

Your tasks:

- Research on paper mills and the paper trade in Vienna during the Schubert era
- Identification of watermarks and assignment of watermark types
- Communication of scientific results in scientific publications and at scientific meetings

Your profile:

- Master’s degree in musicology, art history, or a related historical discipline
- Knowledge of XML as well as common tools of the Digital Humanities (Oxygen, git, etc.)
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks
- Ability to communicate and work in a team
- Willingness to familiarize oneself with an innovative interdisciplinary area of research

The annual gross salary is 23,071.23 Euro in accordance with the collective agreement for employees of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The employment runs until the end of the project in December 2024.
