Centre for Medieval Literature, Syddansk Universitet Odense/University of York

The Institute of History and Civilization, Center for Medieval Literature (CML), Odense, offers two PhD fellowships and two Postdoc fellowships for a period of three years from September 2012.

Jointly based at the University of Southern Denmark (Odense) and the University of York (UK), CML, is a centre of excellence funded by the Danish National Research Foundation for six years, with the possibility of an extension to ten years.

The Centre takes an integrated European approach to the study of Medieval Literature and welcomes applications from those working on the literary cultures of medieval Europe, from Scandinavia to the Middle East. PhD projects will fall within the three main research areas of CML: linguistic interfaces, fictionality and canon formation.

The Centre is led by three senior scholars: Dr. Christian Høgel (SDU), Prof. Lars Boje Mortensen (SDU and Centre Director) and Dr. Elizabeth Tyler (York). We are joined by colleagues in the fields of Classics, History and Literature at SDU and York. The Centre will include PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and guest researchers.

Candidates may apply to both SDU and York.

Successful candidates for PhD studentships will be committed to 1) collaboration which unites scholarship across disciplines and languages, 2) working across at least two languages (the second language may initially be in translation), 3) working within the linguistic interfaces, fictionality or canonization research strands of the CML and 4) creating a shared research environment across SDU and York by spending extended periods of time in both institutions. Your proposal should address areas 1-3 and include a statement of what you think you could contribute to the teamwork that is an important aspect of the CML. PhD students will normally already hold or be studying for a Master’s degree.

The successful candidate for the postdoctoral fellowship will be committed to 1) collaboration which unites scholarship across disciplines and languages, 2) working across at least two languages, 3) working within the interfaces, fictionality or canonization research strands of the CML and 4) creating a shared research environment across SDU and York by spending extended periods of time in both institutions.

Salary: Doctoral students: approx. equivalent to a German E12 / Postdoctoral students: approx. equivalent to a German E13

Informal inquiries can be made to Prof. Lars Boje Mortensen (labo@hist.sdu.dk) and to Associate Prof. Christian Høgel (choegel@hist.sdu.dk)
