The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim represents academic eminence in technology and the natural sciences as well as in other academic disciplines ranging from the social sciences, the arts, medicine, teacher education, architecture to fine art. Applications are invited for a position at the Associate Professor level in the programme of European Studies and Foreign Languages in the Department of Language and Literature at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway (http://www.ntnu.edu/isl).

The successful applicant must have a completed doctorate or equivalent competence in the history of Europe and European integration since 1945. The appointee must be able to document extensive qualifications in European Studies. His/her own work must demonstrate scholarly expertise and high quality research in one or more areas of European Studies after 1945.

The successful applicant must be an active researcher who will collaborate with colleagues to develop the research profile in European Studies at NTNU, as well as initiate and lead research projects. The person appointed will be responsible for teaching courses within the BA programme in European Studies with Foreign Languages and the MA programme in European Studies, on topics such as the history of the EU, EU institutions, EU policy areas, comparative and transnational perspectives on current issues of European politics, and Europe in the world. The appointee will also supervise students enrolled in the BA and MA programmes. The language of instruction is English.

Academic staff without a formal pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching, and who are unable to document equivalent qualifications, are required to complete successfully a recognized course that provides a pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching within two years of taking up the appointment. The university offers such courses.

The person appointed will be required to participate in teaching activities in accordance with the relevant curricula, and to assist in further developing the teaching program, including that of continuing education. S/he will be expected to supervise masters students and doctoral candidates in his/her discipline. He or she will be required take a share of the department's administrative work.

The person appointed will be required to abide by the regulations that govern changes and developments within the discipline, and to follow the requirements of all organizational changes that decisions relating to the university's activities may involve.

Newly employed staff in academic positions who are not already fluent in a Scandinavian language must within three years obtain knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at an equivalent standard to level three in the "Norwegian for Foreigners" courses provided by the Department of Language and Literature. The University will make it possible for the person appointed to attend such a course.

The appointment will be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.

It is policy within the state sector that employees should come from backgrounds that reflect as fully as possible the diversity of the population at large. The state has accordingly set the goal of a workforce whose composition reflects that of the population at large with regard to age and gender. It has also set itself the goal of recruiting employees with an immigrant background, and such individuals are encouraged to apply for this post.

The position as Associate Professor is placed in code 1011 in the State salary regulations, and is remunerated according to the State salary scale, range 24, salary levels from 57 to 77, with gross salary at present from NOK 482.500,- to NOK 710.100,- per year. Two percent of gross salary is deducted and paid into the State Pension scheme.

- A complete list of publications with bibliographical references.
- A description of the applicant's academic work that s/he feels is most significant and that s/he feels the evaluation committee should pay particular attention to, including but not necessarily limited to the 5 or fewer items referred to below.

Applicants are requested not to send copies of their academic works at this point. Following the application deadline, a shortlist of applicants will be drawn up, and all applicants will be informed whether they are placed on the shortlist. Shortlisted applicants will then be asked to submit relevant samples of their academic work. The material to be submitted should comprise at most 5 items not exceeding 250 pages in total, and may include excerpts from longer works and unpublished work.

In assessing applicants’ academic work, emphasis will be placed on quality and relevance, international peer-reviewed publications, esp. in the past 5 years, evidence of effective research collaboration and success in obtaining external research funding.
Joint work will be evaluated. If it is difficult to identify the contributions from individuals in a joint piece of work, shortlisted applicants should enclose a short descriptive summary of what he/she contributed to the work.

Weight will also be placed on pedagogical skills. The evaluation of candidates will take into consideration documented pedagogical experience, including pedagogical education/training in university-level teaching, course design and teaching, and experience of supervising MA students and PhD candidates.
Applicants who are shortlisted will be interviewed and invited to present a trial lecture.

Applicants unfamiliar with the appointment system in Norway are advised that the assessment of applicants is based upon submitted academic work, published or unpublished, and that shortlisted applicants who submit no such work will not be found qualified for the position.
