Position: Research assistant (pre-doc/post-doc)

The Institute for Modern and Contemporary Historical Research (INZ) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences based in Vienna (Austria) invites applications for a qualified research assistant (either pre-doc or post-doc) in Ottoman Studies and/or Balkan History. The appointment is expected to begin as soon as possible but not later than September 1, 2015. The successful applicant will conduct archival research for the following project “State-Building and Local Administration in Imperial Border Regions, 1800-1900: Ottoman, Habsburg, and Serbian Experiences between Sarajevo and Belgrade”. The candidate is also encouraged to write a dissertation/second book related either preferably to this project or in connection with the research area of this Institute entitled „International Rivalry, Government and State-Formation in the Modern Era”. The position is available for three years (fixed-term). Depending on working experience, scientific qualifications and working hours (negotiable, between 25 and 35 hours per week), the annual gross salary may range from €30,281 to €55,572. Relocation expenses will be reimbursed up to a maximum of €1,000.

Basic Qualifications: MA in Ottoman Studies or Modern European History.

Additional Qualifications: Reading ability in Ottoman Turkish; fluency in English; passive knowledge of German is an asset but not required.
