Postdoc reference: A117/18 EG 13 TV-L, fixed-term, 3 years

The time limitation is for academic qualification in accordance with § 2 par. 1 WissZeitVG (Law on Fixed-Term Contracts in Higher Education and Research). According to the law, we can only consider applicants with sufficient remaining qualification time in accordance with § 2 par. 1 WissZeitVG.

The jobholder will be given the opportunity to initiate and implement a project within a period of three years (100% TV-L E-13). The project must be thematically integrated in the subject area of “Shipping and Environment“, newly established at the German Maritime Museum (GMM), with a focus on ships and shipwrecks, as well as maritime technologies against the background of the interactions between humankind and the oceans. Relationships between shipping, marine pollution (from ammunition and shipwrecks, amongst other things) and ocean governance will be given particular consideration. The focus period should be the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. Teaching content (4 weekly lecture hours/semester) should be drawn from the project aims. The project subject matter is intended as part of the new permanent exhibition at the GMM, and should take into consideration the GMM’s collections (e.g. photos, archive documents). If appropriate, collaborations with third-party funded projects will be expected.

Area of responsibility:

Initialisation and implementation of a research project on the theme of “Shipping and the Environment” and/or, if appropriate, collaboration with third party funded projects,
Teaching duties (4 weekly semester hours per semester)
Contribution to academic publications and public events; research funding acquisition,
Participation in the conceptualisation of exhibitions.

This position is targeted at applicants preferably with a background in archaeology, but knowledge of history, historical geography, cultural studies, international law, political science or social sciences is desirable. Applicants must have successfully completed a relevant university degree at Master’s level, a university-level diploma, or a state examination, as well as a dissertation.

Above-average commitment and excellent organisational skills are a condition, as are the capacity for teamwork, very good knowledge of English and willingness to supervise junior academics and to source third party funding.
Relevant experience will be an advantage.

The jobholder’s place of work will be at the German Maritime Museum. Additionally, for carrying out teaching duties, the jobholder will also be allocated a workplace at the University of Bremen.

The fixed-term employment will be on the basis of the regulations set out in the German Law on Fixed-Term Contracts in Higher Education and Research (WissZeitVG).
