Many studies are available that mainly analyse the strategies of the littoral states of the Mediterranean. This special issue enlarges the perspective by including the global powers the EU, the United States, Russia, and China in the analysis. The role of the regional power Turkey is also in focus. Importantly, Russia’s war against Ukraine must be taken into account. Since the Russian president has been using gas as a weapon and trying to put pressure on Europe in particular, the relevance of the energy reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean must be reassessed. In the Open Section, Tado Jurić reviews Big Data sources that could be helpful in determining, estimating, and forecasting the forced emigration flows of refugees from Ukraine. Journal of Politics and Society_ (https://www.hsozkult.de/journals/id/zeitschriften-432). From 2021 onwards, it is published both digitally, in Open Access, and in print, thereby becoming more easily accessible and even more visible internationally, not least in Southeastern Europe itself. Before long, a digital repository of _Südosteuropa_ will be available to everyone. _Comparative Southeast European Studies_ continues to be a forum for scholars in Political Science, Sociology, Contemporary History, Anthropology, Economics, International Relations, Law Studies, Gender Studies, Media Studies, Cultural Studies, and related disciplines. Taking a comparative and broad multidisciplinary perspective it explores critical processes and societal issues related to the area bounded by the eastern Adriatic, the eastern Mediterranean, and the Black Sea. We use two formats to showcase research. There are peer-reviewed research articles and a shorter format open to other text genres, which are presented under headings such as “Commentary”, “Interview”, “Background”, “Policy Analysis”, “Film in Focus”, “Debate”, “Spotlight”, “Book Symposium”, “The Making of...”, for example. This is a flexible section allowing us to address more immediately pertinent political, social, cultural, and academic matters. In addition, the Journal also features a book review section." From 2021 onwards, it is published both digitally, in Open Access, and in print, thereby becoming more easily accessible and even more visible internationally, not least in Southeastern Europe itself. In addition, the Journal also features a book review section." Conflicts in the Eastern Mediterranean have a long history, and recently supposed energy reserves have fuelled confrontations.

Finally, the issue contains four book reviews.
