Public Lecture and Discussion

Michel Wieviorka (Paris): Fortune and Misfortune of the Far Right. The French Case

Michel Wieviorka will analyze the development of the far right in France before and after the presidential election in April 2022. In particular, he will look at the shifts in public discourses on migration and Islam, which the extreme right repeatedly focuses on and thus also produces public resonance.

Michel Wieviorka is professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. He was the President of the Foundation Maison des sciences de l’homme (FMSH) between 2009 and 2020 and director of the Center for Sociological Analysis and Intervention (CADIS, EHESS-CNRS) between 1993 and 2009. Since 2009 Michel Wieviorka is a member of the Academia Europaea. His research has focused on conflict, terrorism and violence, racism, anti-Semitism, social movements, democracy and the phenomena of cultural difference.
